House Republicans have chosen Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., as their nominee for speaker after huddling behind closed doors for over two hours on Wednesday.

GOP lawmakers voted via secret ballot for who they will put up as speaker in a House floor vote, which will likely come sometime this week.

It comes after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted in a vote by eight members of his own party and all House Democrats last week. That moment marked the first time in history the U.S. House of Representatives voted to remove its own leader.

The contest to replace him quickly became a two-man race between Scalise and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.

Scalise has been McCarthy’s longtime No. 2, despite a years long rivalry between the two

Jordan did well.

Steve Scalise only received 14 more votes than Jim Jordan.

113-99.

these are awful people. As hard as I try I can’t understand their mindset, or that of the voters who think guys like him are leaders. He couldn’t lead a troop of Girl Scouts on their annual cookie drive.

To end up with House Speaker Steve Scalise after all the theatrics from Matt Gaetz and Skanky Mace is LOLOLOLOL!!

Well, at least that idiot Ken Buck is still on track to get his CNN gig.

President Trump has been all over the board with his comments on House Republicans. He had nothing to gain by sticking his oar in, but if he WAS committed to Jordan he should’ve worked the phone for him,

And now he’s embarrassed himself with Jordan’s loss.

It’ll be interesting to see if the caucus maintains discipline in getting Scalise across the finish line, but if he loses five votes his loyalists aren’t going to swing to Jordan.

Scalise’s speakership is likely to be indistinguishable from McCarthy’s

Any new speaker would be crazy to accept the gavel under those terms. Has the policy been changed? I haven’t seen any news on that issue.

Perhaps, but maybe he won't lie about things like McCarthy did.

“Multiple twitter accounts reporting 113 to 99”

If that is in fact true and the 99 decide to vote with the Dims, then the GOP in the house will again demonstrate it is not a party bu just a loose coalition of groups that cannot get along.

The Democrats win in Washington D.C. because they can set aside their differences between each other when the main job is to oppose the GOP. The GOP splinters between Libertarians, social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, constitutional conservatives and now populists, and by splintering they - all the GOP groups - always lose. Until they can compromise and build coaltions with each other the GOP groups will always lose to the Dims, because they will refuse to work closely enough with the GOP members they disagree with.

This thread and it’s obvious highlighting of how we can’t get along amongst ourselves should be bookmarked to remind us of why we can’t have nice things.

I don’t know where to stand on this either.. but I can see that our division is clear.

The President has advanced dementia and terminal corruption, the Speaker is undergoing cancer treatment, the Senate minority leader is having strokes nearly every time he speaks in public.

Pretty appropriate, all in all, for the state of America today.

Not impressed. He is ill and certainly not fit to lead the house and is he any better than McCarthy?
