It is difficult to tell anymore, however we also have a number of provably real pictures which people have been labelling as AI, or doctored.
This (picture validity) is going to be a mess for a long time.

What is really dangerous is relying on some photo on the internet as “proof”. Heck - even unaltered video doesn’t capture “the truth” all the time. Look at the George Floyd video. When I first saw it I was shocked. After learning what the cops were actually doing, watching other videos leading up to it, and hearing that Floyd was whacked out on meth added a lot of additional information that was not apparent in the first video.
