MPs adopted in the first reading draft Law No. 8371, which provides for a ban on the UOC.
On October 19, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the first reading government bill No. 8371, which provides for the ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. MP Artem Dmytruk shared this news with the UOJ.
267 MPs voted for the corresponding decision, another 15 voted against, 2 MPs abstained.
Let us remind you that human rights activist Oleg Denisov said that the ban on the UOC cannot be implemented in practice.
As the UOJ reported, according to the Ukrainian MP, Ukraine's allies expressed concern about the ban on the UOC.
Good!
(Because there are many Eastern Orthodox who have convincingly argued that the current Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Dumenko, isn't even a valid bishop, seeing as how he was ordained by Denysenko in 2008...at a time when Denysenko had been defrocked and deposed, and thus could not validly ordain anyone.)
They’ve replaced it with the High Holy Church of Globohomo.
But I guess that wasn't good enough for the Ukrainian government.
Is this the group that goes around mutilating squirrels?
Wow! You really are a piece of… work.
because democracy and freedom of religion.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard about that. Got any context for that observation, out of curiosity?
How large is the UOC in membership and number of churches? Are they mostly located in eastern Ukraine where the Russian-Ukrainians live? What is their relationship with the other orthodox church in Ukraine?
There are no reliable statistics available in terms of the number of actual parishoners, but the apparent observation seems to be that "the UOC is larger in terms of parishes. Even if the war made hundreds of parishes shift to the OCU, the difference still is large. In terms of public support and identification with one of the Churches, the OCU seems to be stronger."
That is substantial, though. I know the government has been persecuting the church for so-called Russian connections, but to ban them might well cause serious backlash among the general population. Loss of freedom to worship hits deep into the marrow.
Save Thy people, O Lord,
and bless Thine inheritance.
Grant victory to Thy Church over her enemies,
and protect Thy people by Thy Holy Cross!
How jewish of you.
Phooey to Zelenskyy and his cronies!!!!
Speedy likes to drink and eat our milk and honey when it comes to Our freedom of speech, but when it comes to religious freedom for his Ukraine buddys, speedy will take a royal dump on that.
Say no more....
Meanwhile back Russia in Catholics and Protestants are persecuted and restrained, even though they are not tied to the intelligence services and military invasion of a neighbor that is invading Russia.
And that excuses Ukraine’s decision to ban its largest Orthodox denomination because...?
(I’m of the opinion that both sides suck, and we should never have gotten involved.)
Because they are helping the invading forces trying to conquer Ukraine and which are currently in control of large swathes of it.
Russia is not a Christian nation and their government and the Orthodox branches they control are part of the state and intelligence services operations to have a controlled and dominant, very visual and theatrical relief valve religion to absorb any of the shallow religious impulses among the Russian population.
