Seven Republicans Offer to Be Suspended and Censured to Make Jim Jordan Next Speaker

As Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) saw his Speaker nomination end after three failed votes, several Republicans are offering to censure themselves to pave the way for him to take over the role.

On Friday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL.) joined six other Republicans in preparing to go to battle to ensure Jordan becomes Speaker of the House.

In a letter to House Republicans, the GOP members said they are willing to be suspended, censured, or removed from the Conference to save Jordan's sinking ship.

"If the holdouts who refuse to vote for Speaker-Designate Jim Jordan would be willing to 'vote with the team' and elect him the 56th House Speaker, we are prepared to accept censure, suspension, or removal from the Conference to accomplish this objective," the letter posted to Gaetz' X account read.

Seven of the eight Republicans who voted to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) signed the letter.

"We understand that some in the Conference wish to punish us," the lawmakers wrote.

However, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO.) did not vote for Jordan in any of the three ballots and told Politico that his name being included in the letter was a "mistake."

"This was a mistake. Congressman Buck had not agreed to sign this letter, and his name has since been removed. His position remains unchanged," a spokesman for Buck said.

He claimed it was a "misunderstanding" because he "helped draft a letter during the last speaker vote."

More from the letter:

The recent passage of the Motion to Vacate the Speaker has cause rancor, hurt feelings, and acrimony in the House Republican Conference. While we stand by our actions, it is our goal to proceed forward with our colleagues, our teammates, and our fellow Republicans in a manner that embraces reconciliation. It has been suggested the Conference cannot move forward until there are consequences for each of us. While we violated no rule of either the House or Republican Conference, we understand some in the Conference wish to punish us. What unites us as Republicans is more important than our disagreements. We must now come together to elect Jim Jordan. We office this sincerely with the hope of unity with purpose. Our fidelity to Republican virtues and principles remains unwavering.

Ultimately, 25 Republicans voted against Jordan on Friday, giving him the lowest percentage of votes for the majority party's nominee for speaker since 1859.

Gaetz flushed them out in the open.

Couldn’t this be done without their permission if they chose to punish them?

I guess they are throwing themselves on their sword if enough “Nays” that hate them would change their vote?? Sad that it would come to that. Too many Rinos screwing up the Nation.

I seems the oddest way to fall on a sword that I have ever heard of.

Members of Congress who have been censured are required to give up any committee chairs they hold. Like a reprimand, a censure does not remove a member from their office so they retain their title, stature, and power to vote.
That looks like a way for the Rinos to move up in stature with new committee appointments

And that PHONY Jen Kiggans was one of them.

Empty Suit...she’s an EMPTY HEAD.

Please GOD have a decent professional, effective, intelligent person to challenge her in the next election.

WHAT A WASTE OF SPACE.

So Gaetz the ring leader who organised this letter did not even know that Ken Buck does not support Jim Jordan for speaker.

What a clown he is.

There are 20-25 House Reps that need to be primaried.

I think the idea is that if the 20-something hold outs agree to vote for Jordan, Gaetz and 6 others agree to no longer conference with them. That would leave Jordan with a more Establishment caucus to work with, but at least he’d be Speaker. Gaetz and company are counting on Jordan keeping his word on promises made, regardless of them no longer caucusing with the Republicans. And the Gaetz 7 would still have their vote in Congress, but their influence would be reduced.

I think this actually shows a willingness to sacrifice something personally, in order to help the institution, which is more than what is offered by any of the Jordan holdouts.

What might Gaetz’s angle be, here? One possibility is that it signals a partial surrender by him and his inner circle (i.e., a willingness to give up some of their influence in order to get Jordan elected).

But it also might mean something different. I might be a move to expose the 20-something GOP holdouts. If they’re really holding out because they don’t want to reward Gaetz for ousting McCarthy, Gaetz and his inner circle’s willingness to give up some of their power should be an acceptable concession for getting them to vote for Jordan. But if their reasons for opposing Jordan have more to do with Jordan himself and not Gaetz, this will expose them.

I agree. But if the holdouts reject the deal, it will expose their stated rationale for voting against Jordan, to be a lie.

So Buck, helps draft the letter but later walks away from it and says he doesn’t support it ?

Seems like par for the course for Buck.

Dont think for one minute that these 25 are true to their convictions im sure some are being heavily you might say threatened from within. The powers inside and outside of the chamber are pulling the strings they dont want Jim Jordan because their maniacal spending will go right out the window and stop the bankrupting and collapse of this country
