USPS touts crackdown on postal crime, carrier robberies, with hundreds of arrests

With mail theft and postal carrier robberies up, law enforcement officials have made more than 600 arrests since May in a crackdown launched to address crime that includes carriers being accosted at gunpoint for their antiquated universal keys, the Postal Service announced Wednesday.

Criminals are both stealing mail and targeting carriers' so-called “arrow keys” to get access to mailboxes.

“We will continue to turn up the pressure and put potential perpetrators on notice: If you’re attacking postal employees, if you steal the mail or commit other postal crimes, postal inspectors will bring you to justice,” Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale told reporters on Wednesday.

The Postal Service announcement on Wednesday came against a backdrop of rallies by the National Association of Letter Carriers calling for better protection of carriers and harsh punishment for criminals who rob them. They've been held across the country in recent months, including one Tuesday in Denver and another Wednesday in Houston.

“Postal carriers have to keep their head on a swivel. They have to take precautions to be extra vigilant with their surroundings,” Rick Byrne, president of the Colorado State Association of Letter Carriers, said Wednesday.

The one idiot in my area that I would like to show how a lousville slugger works is the guy that was wizzing in the trash barrel after hours at the local post office in the PO box area. Hasn't happened lately.

I had some interaction with USPS mail detectives while helping a relative with stolen mail. These guys are the terminators of investigators. I just wish the USPS wasn’t just another tool of the Left.

Screwing around with the US Mail is an incredibly stupid thing to do.

The good Americans from the old days are dwindling in numbers now.

How about postal service employees stealing from customer mail? We have a family member on a fixed income send Christmas and Birthday cards by mail from the post office that were never received. Once she starting sending them in large envelopes (that didn’t look like envelopes that cards come in) it magically stopped happening. The post office employees where she lives said they do have a problem with theft.

How about USPS look at that?

Only problem I had when I was a mail man was being chased by turkeys.

Makes me wonder why they are cracking down now. Don’t get me wrong anytime the bad guys get their comeuppance is a good thing.

Why not before when the common citizen was getting robbed, raped, knocked out on knock-out-games and car jacked?

Almost makes me think they value their own importance more than us.

How about the postal scum delivering ballots across state lines at 3am. Couldn’t find that guy even after he admitted it.

But it’s fine if you want to go to Nordstroms and take a few dozen hideous Louie Vitton tote bags. (Although I wouldn’t carry one if you paid me, yech, they are ugly.)

"I just wish the USPS wasn’t just another tool of the Left."

Perhaps not all mail keys were returned after the election.

Had a neighbor get a birthday card from his adult kid. The sender asked if he’d gone to Texas Roadhouse yet to use the card?

What card?

Yup, they notice brightly colored greeting card envelopes and bend them to feel if there’s a gift card inside. Split the end and slide it out. Card goes on
