SC Department of Education could soon take control of choosing classroom and library materials from local school boards [SoCarolina]

Local school boards across the state are currently responsible for what books and materials are available in their schools. However, the SC Department Of Education could soon change who has that authority.

While controversy over the books allowed in school libraries continues, a notice given last month from the Department of Education proposed that school classroom and library materials need to align with the state’s set standards.

In November of this year, the South Carolina Board Of Education will consider a first reading for who has control of choosing materials allowed in the schools.

If the board votes in favor of the state regulating materials after the required number of readings, the regulation will go to the House and Senate for consideration.

The State Department Of Education released a statement stating:

“We are still in the drafting period…The regulation will be available for review at first reading.”

The Department of Education tells us once the state board has a chance to review and comment on the proposed regulation. They will then be able to answer any further questions.

A useful weapon to use against rogue local school boards? Yet, what if the state goes full radical left, there would be reduced local control.

An interesting article, which comes from the CBS affiliate. Thanks for posting it.

You wonder: "Yet, what if the state goes full radical left, there would be reduced local control."

South Carolina is not likely to go "full radical left" while in those states heavily Left politically, local school boards have been co-opted by the same Lefty voters. This seems a step in a right direction.

Things sure broke down once Biards of Education decided that the mission of schools is not Education but Transforming Society according to “progressive” goals, AKA socialism.

Gov McMaster clashed with the head of the SC Dept of Ed who favored Covid school closures. The state and schools opened early. I would be suspicious of the Dept of Ed.

Best solution is for parents to pull their kids from publik skrewls.

Kids aren’t students to Deep State.

They’re just the grist for its diploma mills.

One of the things that gives me pause is that SC abandoned the Federal common core standards 9 years ago but replaced them with their own version of common core.

It could be a good idea for the state to do their job.. But, the people better remember that old saying "All politics are local". Keep a close eye on what kind of creatures are involved in the county as well..

--- "...SC abandoned the Federal common core standards 9 years ago but replaced them with their own version of common core."

Ideally, local governance is the best choice. A solution perhaps when local, as fully federal, governance becomes in thrall to Leftist perversions is that some other little "federal" entity, i.e. the state within the federal system, seems to be powerful enough to resist the federal government. as well as resist the little, local Leftists. We shall see.

The government doesn’t like it when you go against their will by keeping queer porn away from children. They want to be the ones who decide what goes in your child’s library, and therefore his mind. Resist.

There is no local control to speak of, just the illusion of such. If there was local control, no one with access to our kids would have an ‘Education’ degree in their background.

This kind of “fix” is good when it is proposed, but is soon targeted by activists to install their pervert at the state level, with even more power to impose perversion on every local school. So I hope it doesn’t pass. Locales need to fix their boards, and keep control local.
