Anyone should have immediately known the Russians were our ally and were Nazi enemies. The Russians - or to be precise, the Soviets - started the war as Nazi Germany's ally - the Nazi's principle ally
Thanks to Russian oil and raw materials, the Germans were able to defeat France and wound the UK.
The Russians took over eastern Poland and the Baltics as their prize for their alliance.
Later, in 1945, the Russians replaced the Germans as the conquerors of Central Europe.

exactly
hard to believe this "Russia could have been our friend" crap still persists on FR ... are these Freepers history-ignorant, or just plain Russian propagandists?

(there would be no more need for NATO, if Russia could just stop attacking its neighbors)

The Soviets refused to ally with Britain and France because the Soviets demanded half of Poland to join the alliance.
They knew the Poles would strongly object to that. It’s why a lot of folks blame the Poles for the war, because they say the Poles “forced” the Soviets to ally with Nazi Germany.
