Chaos in Madrid: Thousands of protesters clash with police at Socialist Party HQ
YouTube ^ | 11/9/2023 | Sky News Australia

Violence has erupted between police and thousands of protesters during the fourth consecutive night of demonstrations outside the Spanish Socialist Party's headquarters in Madrid.

On Thursday night, footage captured protesters throwing bottles, beer cans, and fireworks at a police cordon protecting the headquarters.

Police used batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd as tensions rose.

The protests were triggered by the Socialist Party's deal with a Catalan separatist party, granting amnesty for those involved in a failed secession bid.

In exchange, the separatist party supports acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's bid to form a new government.

Earlier on Thursday, the founder of far-right Vox and former leader of the conservative Popular Party (PP) in Catalonia, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, was shot in the head in Madrid.

Mr Vidal-Quadras is reported to be in stable condition after his assailant allegedly fled on a motorbike.

Vox, central to anti-amnesty protests, may see increased participation from its supporters in response to the incident

The protests are anticipated to continue through to at least late November.

The “national divorce” occurring in Spain (and other European nations, although not so violently) will soon spread “across the pond”.

Lock and load.

Spain is an interesting situation... the “conservative” parties in Spain support a strong central government - and the very reason they are out of power is because the separatist parties side with the Socialists. If the conservative parties just let the separatists bug off, the conservatives would have no problem winning elections.

I was in Spain when the first round of voting occurred over the summer. In the same sort of outcome that we see here in the U.S., and a few weeks ago in Argentina, the conventional wisdom was that the establishment left would face the wrath of the voters due to a crappy economy, terrible poll numbers, failed policies and an angry, disenchanted electorate... and in every case, the establishment left defied expectations in a big way.

For reference, the Vox-Party of Spain has been around for about a decade. They were prior to that moment...elements of the People’s Party, and were leaned further to the right of the People’s Party.

Their chief original goals? Rewriting the national constitution to marginalize regional authorities. Oddly enough, to fund the start-up of the party...they had political donations (up to around a million Euro) from Iran.

Popularity went up with Vox during the Covid era...as they challenged standards established and vax mandates. Vox also sided with Trump during that 4-year period.

If you did try to line up how right-wing Vox is...with a hundred Spaniards....you’d get 100 different answers. Some actually see them as moderate...some see them as hard-core. Summer national election (2023), they took 12-percent of the votes (19 parties in the election).

Catalonia was/is the home of the Communists in Spain, isn’t it?

19 parties...

Now, THAT is a divided electorate.

Nothing particularly new. How rowdy the various groups of Spain gets has been going up and down for awhile. The most extreme events were with the Basques. There are a few recognized "nationalities" in Spain.

Is vote-rigging becoming an art?

Catalonia was home to more than one Marxist or anarchist party prior to the Spanish civil war. See George Orwell’s book, “Homage to Catalonia”.

“Homage to Catalonia”.

That's one book I'm remembering, but it's been decades since I read it.

Also "Mine Were of Trouble: A Nationalist Account of the Spanish Civil War" by Peter Kemp. He also fought in the war, on the Nationalist side. That one I read just 3 years ago.
