Iranian-Backed Houthi Terrorists Seize Cargo Ship In Red Sea

Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists from Yemen reportedly seized a cargo ship in the Red Sea on Sunday, which comes after the terrorist group had recently threatened to target Israeli-flagged vessels in the area.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the Bahamas-flagged Galaxy Leader cargo ship was leased to a Japanese company from a British company that is partially owned by an Israeli businessman.

“Israel strongly condemns the Iranian attack against an international vessel,” the Israeli government said in a statement. “The ship, which is owned by a British company and is operated by a Japanese firm, was hijacked with Iran guidance by the Yemenite Houthi militia.”

The statement said that there were 25 crew members on the ship from all over the world, but none were from Israel. The 620-foot ship had left a port in Turkey and was headed to India when it was seized by the terrorists.

“This is another act of Iranian terrorism and constitutes a leap forward in Iran’s aggression against the citizens of the free world, with international consequences regarding the security of the global shipping lanes,” the statement concluded.

Earlier in the day, the Houthis said through one of their media outlets that they would “target all types of ships that carry the flag of the Zionist entity or are operated by or owned by Israeli companies, calling on all countries of the world to withdraw their citizens working on the crews of the enemy entity’s ships, and to avoid shipping on them.”

The Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Israel in the weeks following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack.

The U.S. Navy shot down approximately two dozen drones and three cruise missiles fired by the Houthis late last month. Officials said that the USS Carney, a guided-missile destroyer, shot down the drones after they swarmed the ship. They did not disclose the munitions used to shoot down the missiles or the drones.

Jonathan Schanzer, senior vice president of research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, highlighted and translated a social media post from a Houthi official published around the time news broke that the Houthis had seized the cargo vessel.

The post said: “Allah is the greatest. Death to America. Death to Israel. F*** the Jews. Victory for Islam.”

What is the current law of the sea concerning pirates? Keel-hauling or hanging from the yardarm?

I'm not sure what international "law" currently states, but you are correct in recognizing this as piracy. Moreover it is the standard form of piracy in the world at the time of our Founding and for most of the past 1500 years. The Hollywood romanticized Caribbean/ libertarian form of piracy was a minor blip in comparison. Now I don't know of any non-international reason for us to become involved in this case nor do I have hopes for any favorable changes to the international rules applicable. But for where there are clear US interests, as there was at our Founding when 1/4 of the federal budget was consumed by paying off pirates, we can revise our rules.

Article I § 8 The Congress [ie. not Biden] shall have power: …
    To define and punish piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and offences against the law of nations;
    To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;

IIRC European countries signed a treaty to ban letters of marque and reprisal, but the US declined to sign it. I wonder if Elon Musk might like to buy one.

What is the current law of the sea concerning pirates?

You'll have to ask the maritime division of Lloyd's of London.

If your ship is armed and not a military vessel you will be refused entrance to most ports.

I wonder if there would be a market for armory ships who would hold your small arms while you are in port for a small fee?

Small arms?

The crew needed a lookout and a Stinger (or a Javelin would do nicely too.)

I’ve heard references to another Houthi cruise missile shot down by a US ship, but nothing definite? Had to be in the last few days, I think...

Yup. Back then 8 Marines were enough to take over an Islamic government. Of course it helped that their commander in chief had a positive IQ.

A couple of 50 cals would do enough damage to keep most pirates that are not state sponsored away.

For the state actors, not much you can do.

Vocabulary is not often taught anymore.

I figure if it was not for pirate movies being lucrative I would have to refer to them as "sea muggers" for people to know what I was talking about.
