Just for context, the population of Russia today is pretty similar to the US population during World War II.
A real demographic crisis is occurring in Western Europe where the ethnic European populations have a tiny fertility rate compared to the non-ethnic European, non-Christian populations. This passed the point of no return a very long time ago. They should be more worried than Russia.

The population may be similar in the bottom line number, but the devil is in the detail.
160 million with 40 million under 15 and 70 million women under 40 (20 of whom are under 15) is much healthier than 160 million with 20 million under 15 and 45 million women under 40 (10 of whom are under 15).
“Important” observation #1: The earth’s population is too large. It’s unsustainable.
“Important” observation #2: Russia, China, Europe, etc. face demographic collapse. They don’t have enough people, and it’s a crisis.
Fact: In developed countries, reproduction rates are down and have been for some time. The number of young adults simply will not be large in the next few decades. The number of older adults who have largely ceased to contribute to the economy is going to continue to grow quite a bit. You can dig your way out of a demographic collapse, but it will literally take generations. This is a problem for the rest of the 21st century.
Solution #1: In the US and in Europe the chosen solution seems to be importing lots of immigrants from the third world and thereby transforming your developed country into a third world country with lots of people.
Solution #2: Intentional planning by the political class for how to have a society with lots of old people, fewer young people and appropriate expectations for what society can be reasonably expected to provide as the population changes. That’s called Leadership. It’s Management. It’s the thing we no longer know how to do. But it can be re-learned, and it won’t take generations to learn it.

The “unsustainable” global population is simply a Leftist talking point.
As is the “crisis” of a demographic collapse. It’s a political opinion about things.
On the one hand, the Left wants to drastically reduce the world’s population. Because they hate humanity. If they can reduce the world’s population to 500 million, they would be happy. This is frequently discussed.
On the other hand, the government wants a lot of tax revenue and lacks the large population of young workers that will provide that revenue. And (they tell me) there is a lot of work that “Americans won’t do” which is why the Left wants an open border and a massive influx of immigrants. It’s part of the “fundamental transformation” that the Left wants.
Too many people? Not enough people? The Left is constantly answering “Yes” to both questions.
But the demographic situation is factual. And people can have opinions about whether it is good or bad. But the key thing to do is to PLAN for a future of lots of older people and fewer young people. I don’t see a whole lot of really sensible planning going on.
Yes, good point. A healthy society wants to reproduce. Do you have comparison of the Russian numbers with the Western European numbers looking at only the ethnic European populations? I have the sense that if you have take the immigrants (largely Muslim and/or African) out of the picture, Western Europe looks pretty awful demographically as well, perhaps worse but IDK.

The world could easily support twice the population.
90% of the worlld’s population lives in the northern hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere is largely unpopulated.
A more important observation would be that certain extremely wealthy people who subscribe to the same error that you do are buying up the best farm land on Earth.
One might ask why.
