Higher cognitive ability linked to higher chance of having voted against Brexit

A new analysis suggests that a person with higher cognitive ability may have been more likely to vote "Remain" in the 2016 Brexit referendum, and that a spouse's cognitive skills may also be linked to Brexit voting decisions. Chris Dawson and Paul Baker of the University of Bath, U.K., present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on November 22, 2023.

Having higher cognitive ability has previously been associated with a greater tendency to recognize and resist misinformation. Studies have also shown that the U.K. public received a large volume of misinformation about the referendum prior to voting for the U.K. to withdraw from the EU ("Brexit"). However, while a growing body of research has investigated potential links between people's Brexit votes and socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and psychological factors, less research has addressed the potential role of cognitive ability in their decisions.

Dawson and Baker analyzed data on 3,183 heterosexual U.K. couples collected as part of a large survey study called Understanding Society. They examined whether there were any links between participants' reporting that they had voted "Leave" or "Remain" and their cognitive ability—as measured by their performance on a variety of tasks. The researchers statistically accounted for other factors that could also be linked to voting decisions, such as socioeconomic and sociodemographic traits, political preferences, and a widely studied set of personality traits known as the Big Five.A new analysis suggests that a person with higher cognitive ability may have been more likely to vote "Remain" in the 2016 Brexit referendum, and that a spouse's cognitive skills may also be linked to Brexit voting decisions. “heterosexual U.K. couples”

Hmm, so the survey was racist from the beginning?

Well, the article does show that high IQ in physics does not necessarily commute.

These pretentious elites used to laugh at how the UK tabloid press would flatter their readers.

So what is this elite flattering BS in Phys.org supposed to be ?

Does this also mean that “geniuses” are more likely to be evil?

here’s another one:

“Individuals with the highest cognitive ability score attained a vaccination rate of 80% within 50 days of COVID-19 vaccine availability. Comparatively, those with the lowest cognitive scores reached 80% vaccine update after 180 days”

Bet they don’t feel so smart now though.

I suspect these researchers connect "Higher Cognitive Ability" with Woke or Left Leaning.

Hardly. People don't analyze what they see and hear. If you had multiple college degrees you were more likely to hear stories that said Brexit would be a bad thing, and you believed those stories because they accorded with what you already believed. If you didn't have a degree you were less likely to hear such stories, so you were less likely to believe that Brexit would be a bad thing.

Guardian article: Why smart people are more likely to believe fake news. Most of his examples are wrong, his beliefs are the opposite of ours, but he more or less understands the underlying principle.

I heard about this, but I disagreed that a One World “Santa Claus” govt was in my best interest.

Santa Claus, the jolly old man with a snowy white beard, is indeed a mysterious figure. 🎅🏼 He’s like a festive detective, keeping tabs on all of us during the holiday season. Let’s explore this in a whimsical way:

🎵 Santa Claus is coming to town… 🎵

When You’re Sleeping: Santa has a direct line to your alexa and smart TV. He knows when you’re catching those Z’s, whether it’s a peaceful slumber or a restless night of tossing and turning. 🛌

When You’re Bad or Good: Santa’s got an AI generated spreadsheet where he meticulously logs your deeds for your permanent record.
Did you share your toys? Kind to your siblings? Ate your bugs and veggies? 📝

If you’ve been good, he’s got a special gift with your name on it, wrapped in shiny paper and topped with a glittering bow. 🎁

If you’ve been a bit naughty or said wrong speak, you should worry; Santa’s here to judge. He’ll still leave you something on social media maybe a lump of coal, or maybe even a full cancelation. 🔥

So, my dear friend, whether you’re snoozing or scheming, Santa’s got his twinkling eyes on you. And remember, it’s all in the spirit of joy, kindness, and AI magic! 🎄✨

So - a bunch of people utterly convinced that they are smarter than the people they’re studying have concluded that smart people agree with them. This isn’t science, it’s neurosis.
