Power grid operator warns that shut down of coal plant may disrupt millions
Washington Examiner ^ | 23 November 2023 | Christopher Hutton

The operator of a power grid in the mid-Atlantic is warning that the planned shutdown of a coal-fired power plant could disrupt and short-change electrical supply before people can replace it.

PJM Interconnection, the company that manages wholesale electricity in parts or the entirety of 13 states and provides electricity for more than 65 million Americans, said that they expect the shutdown of the Brandon Shores coal power plant outside of Baltimore to disrupt the power there and leave it wanting. The plant's owner, Talen Energy, made a deal with the environmentalist group Sierra Club to deactivate it by 2025 in order to diminish carbon dioxide outputs. That deal may not be good for residents, however.

I’ve seen four of them shut down within 50 miles of me the last ten years. Amazingly, I’m still getting electricity at a reasonable price.

Why would an private electric company make any deal with an Eco-Terrorist group like the Siera Club?

As my grandma used to say; “don’t cut off your nose to spite your face”

This is the intentional destruction of the nation.

“ On November 10, 2020, Talen announced its commitment to transform for a clean energy future. As part of its transformation announcement Talen noted that it will decarbonize its fleet and invest in developing renewable energy, battery storage and digital infrastructure primarily on owned land within its footprint. It also introduced its “Force for Good” philosophy, which includes maintaining its commitment to the communities in which it operates, by converting, rather than retiring its fossil generation facilities and creating new opportunities for these stakeholders through its transformation. This announcement made Talen one of the first in the competitive power industry to commit to an accelerated transformation away from coal. The Sierra Club expressed its support of Talen’s actions.

Talen later reported further tangible steps made toward its goal of leading the clean energy transition and being a Force for Good. In April 2021, It announced that it had entered into a joint venture with Pattern Energy to pursue the development, financing, construction and operation of approximately 1.4 Gigawatts of utility scale renewable energy projects over the next five years. Then, in May 2021, Talen unveiled its 1 Gigawatt of battery storage project pipeline. Both the renewable energy and battery storage projects will largely be constructed on land within Talen’s footprint, creating new opportunities for its communities.

During its May 2021 ESG Equity Investor Day, Talen outlined plans to construct a digital infrastructure campus on owned land adjacent to its Susquehanna nuclear generation facility outside Berwick, Pennsylvania. The campus would include facilities that would house data center and cryptocurrency mining operations. Targeted tenants for the data center facilities are organizations including Google, Amazon and Apple, to help facilitate data storage, cloud computing and processing. As the demand for technology increases, so does the requirement for energy to power these applications. Susquehanna’s carbon-free power can offer a clean, reliable source of energy for clients and their applications. The campus’ first facility hosts a 48-megawatt data center, with additional facilities to be constructed in the future. It also includes one 200-megawatt bitcoin mining facility as part of Talen’s joint venture with TeraWulf Inc. Talen subsidiary Cumulus Coin serves as 75% owner and operator of the Nautilus Cryptomine facility which is directly powered by Susquehanna. Talen subsidiary Cumulus Data announced in January 2022 that the data center facility shell was complete and ready for its first tenant. The Nautilus Cryptomine facility began operations in early 2023.

On May 9, 2022, Talen filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in an attempt to reduce its $4.5 billion debt.[14] Its plan of reorganization was approved [15] by the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on December 15, 2022. The company completed its restructuring and emerged from bankruptcy[16] on May 17, 2023. Upon its emergence, ownership of Talen Energy was transferred to a majority of its unsecured creditors consisting of a number of large financial institutions. Mark “Mac” McFarland also assumed the role of President, CEO and member of the Board, and a new independent board of directors was seated.

Talen Energy has been named as one of America’s Best Midsize Employers[17] by Forbes Magazine for three years in a row, and the company continues to maintain its strong track record for operational excellence.”

A deeper understanding of the power generation/delivery crisis can be had by reading "Shorting the Grid", by Meredith Angwin. A long-time insider, she lays out how Congress, doing the bidding of the Green Lobby, destroyed the ultra-reliable vertical-integration model to open the door to the all-but-useless "renewables" scammers.

So what if we die? They want that too.

Indeed, drastic population reduction was the avowed goal of the people who invented "Global Warming". The late Dr. Tim Ball explained it all in his book "The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science"

I had to look it up. It’s about 40 miles from my house.

Typical for Maryland. Always do what is against the interest of the taxpaying citizens.

“Why would an private electric company make any deal with an Eco-Terrorist group like the Siera Club?”

So they can milk every last dime of their investment for a while longer. Gives them a fixed date when they need to decommission the facility. Without that, closure date becomes vague due to protests, which harms the share price.

Basically the Sierra club is agreeing not to interfere if they close the place by X date. The smart play for the company would to agree to this and once it is clear next year that without this plant, people will not have energy due to the failures of the alternative energy source, they keep the place open, buying another couple of years.

Wash, rinse and repeat until the Sierra club gets bored and goes somewhere else to perform blackmail.

We've shut dozens down here in Texas over the past 20 years and we have rates around 8.4c kw/h which is about 8 times higher than it has to be if we still burned lignite.

Add to that DAYS of rolling blackouts in the winter storm of '21 (we had 2 hours of power out of every 24 hours for 3 days here in Dallas), we are morons for closing coal plants. We haven't built a single nuclear plan except for that one in Georgia in 30 years + I believe.

Why not, most ‘residents’ in Maryland voted for Democrats and Democrats are not shy about their plans to shut down coal.

\%

It’s the usfs/BLM model,,, they infiltrate the targeted company until it’s captured from the inside , top down, and then do the 2 step tango...sue, settle out of court, rinse , repeat.

It couldn’t happen in a better area than the east coast. Let the smug liberal elites sit in the dark shivering or sweltering with their EVs stranded when their vaunted windmills and solar farms can’t do the job.
