Multiple GOP lawmakers expect former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to step down from his seat before the end of the year, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: The potential exit of McCarthy — who privately told donors he is looking to "get the hell out," according to a source familiar with the conversation — could leave the House GOP with an even narrower majority.
"I have another week or so to decide because if I decide to run again, I have to know in my heart I'm giving 110%," McCarthy said at The New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday, referring to California's Dec. 8 filing deadline. "I have to know that I want to do that. I also have to know if I'm going to walk away, that I'm going to be fine with walking away. And so I'm really taking this time now," he said.

I would expect he will not run for reelection , because having held the speaker job and then getting demoted as he was , that’s got to deflate his desire to remain in Congress.
But if he were to resign before the end of his term , then that creates a vacancy which narrows the GOP majority in Congress. I don’t know if a special election would be held to fill the remainder of his term if he were to resign soon.
McCarthy only cares about himself, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gave the new leader a kick in the teeth by leaving early.
We should build a statue celebrating Matt Gaetz. He exposed a former leader of the Republican party as just another asswipe.
Reminds me of when Jason Chaffetz did just that. Didn’t narrow the vote any but these people have an obligation to serve their full terms.

Yup. The Speaker is automatically one of “The Gang of Eight,” who have ALL special access to the IC records and briefings. Kev knew all the secrets, and just dragged his feet on anything that would expose the awful corruption permeating Fedzilla.
Things like which congress creatures are compromised, bribed, blackmailed. IF he wanted. He could see all the info on the so-called Russian hack of the DNC, which didn’t happen.
If he is doing it he needs to announce now, so someone has time to get the funding and on the ballot.

Hanging around in Congress after getting removed as House Speaker is like a 12-time All-Star in Major League Baseball being asked to stay on the roster as a utility infielder as his skills fade. It just ain’t going to happen.

Constitution requires a special election to fill a vacant House seat. I believe the window is mostly 6 months until the next general. Vacancy that would last more than 6 months, special election required. Vacancy less than 6 months, it is possible to wait until next general.
