Fears of a NATO Withdrawal Rise as Trump Seeks a Return to Power
NYT via Yahoo ^ | December 9th, 2023 | Jonathan Swan, Charlie Savage and Maggie Haberman

For 74 years, the NATO has been America’s most important military alliance. Presidents of both parties have seen NATO as a force multiplier enhancing the influence of the United States by uniting countries on both sides of the Atlantic in a vow to defend one another.

Donald Trump has made it clear that he sees NATO as a drain on U.S. resources by freeloaders. He has held that view for at least a quarter-century.

In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump wrote that “pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually.” As president, he repeatedly threatened a U.S. withdrawal from the alliance.

Yet as he runs to regain the White House, Trump has said precious little about his intentions. His campaign website contains a single cryptic sentence: “We have to finish the process we began under my administration of fundamentally reevaluating NATO’s purpose and NATO’s mission.” He and his team refuse to elaborate.

That vague line has generated enormous uncertainty and anxiety among European allies and American supporters of the country’s traditional foreign policy role.

European ambassadors and think tank officials have been making pilgrimages to associates of Trump to inquire about his intentions. At least one ambassador, Finland’s Mikko Hautala, has reached out directly to Trump and sought to convince him of his country’s value to NATO as a new member, according to two people familiar with the conversations.

In interviews over the past several months, more than a half-dozen current and former European diplomats — speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution from Trump should he win — said alarm was rising on Embassy Row and among their home governments that Trump’s return could mean not just the abandonment of Ukraine but a broader U.S. retreat from the continent and a gutting of the Atlantic alliance.

Not only is NATO a parasite sucking the life blood of the American people, it is an existential security risk to us as well.

We are treaty obligated to protect far flung countries, at enormous risk to ourselves.

If Russia was stupid enough to take the Baltics, we would be treaty bound to engage existential war over friggin' Latvia. And the are multiple other countries where we have no real interests whatsoever that we are similarly obligated.

US out of NATO.

Hilarious. The Slimes is worried about NATO when Trump returns to the White House.

Good. As well they should worry.

I know many military members who would love to see our bases in Europe all closed or given to the host nation. Right or not, that’s what they want.

Hilarious.

People like Maggie Haberman have been foaming at the mouth about NATO for 70 years. They never liked it threatening the Sacred Soviet Socialist State where everyone was “equal”.

Now she’s worried it’ll go away? Just because DJT says ante up?

Both Britian and France have nuclear weapons. Europe can defend itself. Does it want to? That question is legitimate because it is allowing itself to be invaded by an enemy that it has struggled against for centuries.

Would that withdrawal also include withdrawing from the IMF, WHO, and most importantly, evicting the UN and expelling all the diplomats from the US?

If so, then I’m voting early and often.

Reports are saying that the UN is helping these people crash out borders. Would love to see them all forced to leave NYC for Europe or Africa. Hell, maybe even China. Where they can be spied on non-stop by the CCP.

Kind of arrogant of them. After all who is paying the bills?

I have always said that we should stay in the UN and NATO as long as it benefits us and allows us to influence world politics. As long as we are getting our money’s worth.

I’d say to them... go ahead, make my day. Time for Europe to be on their own if they don’t appreciate us. Good luck with Russia.

Should t that read: For 74 years, the NATO has been America’s biggest leach sucking the life out of the US taxpayer.

NATO is nothing but a full employment program for European bureaucrats and a hog trough for the defense industry. The ussr collapsed and Warsaw Pact ever 30 years ago.
