‘Escape liberal hell’: Republicans really are fleeing Washington State
Seattle Times ^ | 12/09/2023 | Danny Westneat

At first, the ads seemed like a pandemic-era curiosity, a niche political pitch playing on the red state, blue state divide.

“Escape liberal hell,” counseled one sales video from a Boise, Idaho, real estate agent. “Here are seven reasons conservatives flock to Idaho.”

“Time is not on your side, flee the city NOW before the coming collapse!” read another ad for 5 acres in Moyie Springs, Idaho, listed for $259,000 by a Sandpoint, Idaho, company called Black Rifle Real Estate. (Motto: “Ready. Aim. Move.”)

The idea that people would pick up and move solely for politics has seemed like a stretch. Moving for a job, schools, space, a rural lifestyle, yes. People relocate for all sorts of reasons — nearly 250,000 moved here from another U.S. state last year, with 258,000 going the other way, the Census Bureau says.

But now, there’s solid evidence that some people really are migrating over partisanship.

This past week, Idaho released a database of voters who have moved into that state, along with where they came from and what political party they signed up for when they got there. In Washington, we don’t register by party — everybody is an independent voter. In Idaho, you generally have to affiliate with a party to vote in the primaries, so party choice is right on the government’s registration form.

The political makeup of who has moved to Idaho is eye-opening. It is, as the Idaho Capital Sun news site called it, a “Republican fever dream.”

Lived in IL near Chicago for 61 years. Left early this year and moved to Tennessee. Much of the move was political. I was shocked at how much better government works down here. IL is a lost cause. Used to be a nice state, until the 1990’s or so.

Let’s be honest here, many of these “escapees” will move to a new locale and vote the same way they always have. They are simply too controlled by their emotions to think rationally and critically and vote for less government (the source of most of our problems). These are emotionally weak or damaged individuals who seek the comfort of being around the old familiar, even if the old familiar is what they flee.

“The ones left behind will not understand why their urban landscape turned so toxic but it won't change their politics one bit. This is likely to come to walls, the only question being where they'll be fixed.”

That is why I called my fellow Chicagoans “Dummycrats”. They ate too stupid to learn. Unfortunately, some of my friends are not wealthy enough to move or are bogged down with family ties.

Recently I have seen a lot of Washington State license plates. Houston area. That is a drive of about 2,000 miles. The ones I have met are what my wife and I call “normal Americans”.

We left Vancouver, WA after 17 years to move to NH. I dislike the snow but could not stand the politics of the Portland metro area.

It’s a shame. The most beautiful of the lower 48 states. The state that wifey and I were going to spend every summer after retiring.

It really is beautiful. My dad was stationed there (Whidbey Island in Puget Sound) when I was in early elementary school. I have very nice memories of us kids running around in the woods, exploring, building forts, splashing around the shores of Cranberry Lake, catching tadpoles…such a pretty place.

Seattle, where we’d go via ferry every month or six weeks for a day or weekend was even nice back then.

As usual, liberals ruin everything.

I escaped 18 years ago. Will probably never return even to visit, though the natural beauty there is unmatched.

I escaped California 9 years ago. Only returned to pry my mom out. Have only been more than 4 ft into the state once, to attend a memorial service for a much beloved boss, though the natural beauty there is unmatched.

Not quite, but if you're leaving california don't do a 1031 exchange for your new property. You will still have to file a 540 every year for 5 years, worse if you ever convert the new property to a new use or sell it you will have to file one last 540 so california can, in their words, "claw back" your tax savings!

“And salaries tend to be WAY lower”

Wages are variable. What I’m concerned with is the viability of wage. If the price of a loaf of bread is high then the base salaries need to be compatable to handle the cost. And that includes the thought that not every job needs to be a liveable wage no matter what for a family of four.

The living wage in Idaho is $11.75 per hour, which is higher than the state minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. This means that workers in Idaho need to earn at least $11.75 per hour in order to cover their basic needs, such as food, housing, and transportation.

The average wage in Idaho is $21.72 per hour. However, wages vary widely across different industries and occupations in Idaho. For example, the average hourly wage for workers in food preparation and service is just $12.43 per hour, while the average hourly wage for workers in healthcare support occupations is $16.61 per hour.

https://www.workstream.us/wage-index/idaho#:~:text=The%20living%20wage%20in%20Idaho%20is%20%2411.75%20per%20hour%2C%20which,food%2C%20housing%2C%20and%20transportation.

Too much of the appearance to wages is expressed by the minimum since the above numbers indicate that the wage levels are above the standard of needs. And this is an average, not all encompassing. There are going to be lower and higher wages depending upon the employers needs. So some wages are not for the family of four. It is for the student wishing to earn pocket change for dates and sodas.

But therein lies the problem. As the job market shrinks in those actual liveable wages jobs due to many factors like the ability of people to do more complex and responsibility carrying positions along with just not showing up for work, more and more people who actually are trained and need that liveable wage for that family of four are stuck taking the minimum wage jobs. So the dollar income problem is being reshaped based upon availability when college trained are competing with dropouts. And while the college trained or experienced trained people are doing nothing preying on government programs, the employers learn to work without that position they can’t fill. It goes away or is modified to meet the needs.

But it all accounts for the wage level which at this point is above employee actual needs on the average. And part of that is that unprofessional jobs like washing dishes in a restaurant as compared to the supervisor at Microsoft are growing so the wage level is off the cuff applied at needs if the employee has done what is neccessary to fill the position. But the wage for the non-professional isn’t expected to meet the average and establishes the use of the minimum.

Seattle metro didn’t stand a chance with me.
