Well, in the context of a civil trial in New York, it is a bad thing in that the trier of fact can draw a negative inference from a party asserting the privilege against self-incrimination. [See NY PJI 1:75, NY PJI 1:75.1 ,and related commentary and case law]

Trump read a statement as a response to the first question and then for every other idiotic question he answered: ‘Same answer’
The questions were in the vein of: Did you falsify your financial statement in 20XX which then directly lead to a reduction of loan interest rates which amounted to a fraudulently savings of X millions of dollars?
I was almost screaming at the TV: You idiots! Everybody that has a mortgage knows that banks don’t base it on what you think your own house is worth, they rely on an appraisal. The New York attorneys were basically criminalizing anyone that had made an estimate on how much their property would sell for, if it differed from its tax assessment.
Very scary. If it can happen to President Trump, it can happen to you. Next time someone asks, what do you think your property is worth? if you answer you will be committing a crime.
Considering the fact that during his four hour deposition Trump took the Fifth 440 times, it is probably best he doesn’t take the stand.
I’ve conducted thousands upon thousands of depositions. In addition, I’ve been deposed several times. It is generally not the “smart” thing to do in a civil case as the jury can make a negative inference from the invocation of the privilege against self-incrimination.
