Javier Milei about-turns as he commits to Paris climate agreement

Javier Milei, the new president of Argentina, has about-turned on his commitment to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Mr Milei, who was sworn into office on Sunday, had previously said he intended to rescind Argentina’s participation in the agreement after calling climate change a hoax.

But the country’s new top climate diplomat, Marcia Levaggi, told Reuters on Sunday that Mr Milei’s government had sent her to head the Argentine delegation at the United Nations Cop28 climate talks underway in Dubai.

Like clockwork.

After the election, it is business as usual.

That is an assumption based on the way you think...not on any facts.

It's too early to tell is Milei is really doing an about-face on climate or if this is simply a ploy.

Things look very different from the inside of a government and Milei will have to amend his plan of attack on Liberal policies based on what he learns now that he's inside.

This is horrible journalism.

There is no quoted statement, no substantive concrete decision made, yet the journalist arbitrarily declares backpeddling and an about turn.

The article doesn’t mention anything about Milei “committing” to anything. He simply sent a representative to the meeting. Very misleading headline at the source.

The thing is, the people of Central and South America are dumb. Dumb, ignorant, uneducated and gullible.

And we’ve let the floodgates open to welcome a mere 60 million into our country.

Yep, bad journalism/headline...

“But the country’s new top climate diplomat, Marcia Levaggi, told Reuters on Sunday that Mr Milei’s government had sent her to head the Argentine delegation at the United Nations Cop28 climate talks underway in Dubai.”

No mention of support of the Paris agreement...she may be going to tell them to get lost.

Even the President of “Cop28” (held in one of the largest carbon fuel supplier countries I might add) says: “‘No science’ behind phasing out fossil fuels”...”Dr Sultan Al-Jaber, who is Cop28 president, said phase-out of oil and gas was not necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement target of 1.5C”.

The first thing one should ask when reading an article like this is "why was this article written?"

It's not to inform, there is barely enough accurate useful information in it to even treat as conjecture, it's not to empathise with Milei, the media wants to see him fail in every way possible. The only reason you write this article is to demotivate supporters and make the opponents feel like there's hope.

Every english language article about Milei for the next year will have this slant, that he's really far more conventional than we were led to believe and that he's just keeping things the same in Argentina... unless something is going poorly, then it's evidence of his ideological failure. Any momentum that he had to overthrow socialism has to be squashed, lest it continue to grow.
