Hungary blocks €50bn of EU funding for Ukraine

Hungary has blocked €50bn ($55bn; £43bn) in EU aid for Ukraine - just hours after an agreement was reached on starting membership talks.

"Summary of the nightshift: veto for the extra money to Ukraine," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said after Thursday's talks in Brussels.

EU leaders said the aid negotiations would resume early next year.

Ukraine is critically dependent on EU and US funding as it continues to fight occupying Russian forces.

The aid blocking was announced by Mr Orban shortly after the EU leaders decided to open membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova and to grant candidate status to Georgia.

Hungary - which maintains close ties with Russia - has long opposed membership for Ukraine but did not veto that move.

Mr Orban left the negotiating room momentarily in what officials described as a pre-agreed and constructive manner, while the other 26 leaders went ahead with the vote.

A spokesperson for Charles Michel, president of the European Council, said the agreement had been unanimous.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the EU decision on membership talks as a "victory".

Commenting on Mr Orban's opposition to the aid, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said: "We still have some time, Ukraine is not out of money in the next few weeks."

"We agreed with the 26 countries," he added. "Viktor Orban, Hungary, were not yet able to do that. I am fairly confident we can get a deal early next year. We are thinking of late January."

This “war” has got to end. It’s become one of the biggest money laundering schemes in history. Stopping the killing should be paramount and starving the war machine is the best way to do it.

And on the HOME FRONT, unwise people have been declaring Mike Johnson to be a “traitor”. The reason? He agreed to provide some aid to Ukraine.

He “compromised” with the Biden administration. Biden was desperately seekin $61 Billion dollars for this Ukrainian aid. Johnson “compromised” and included $100 million in aid for Ukraine. Who do we think got the best end of THAT deal. It sure wasn’t Biden, the globalists and the neocons.

Folks, don’t tear Johnson down. He’s doing OK and he’s JUST GETTING STARTED!

Orban should join Russia. Oh wait, the Soviets tried that already. Orban must have skipped over the tanks in Budapest history. He couldn’t show glee being born too late. He probably would rush out to welcome them next time when it comes round. Those Russians saving Hungarians from the darkness /sarc

It wasn’t Russians giving the Hungarians a bunch of crap for putting up border defenses to prevent their country from being overrun by Islamics. It was globohomo EU “leaders”.

And it is quite possible to believe “a pox on both their houses” when it comes to Putin and Zelensky. And Biden and the EU. There are way more than two sides to this one.

“Orban should join Russia. Oh wait, the Soviets tried that already. Orban must have skipped over the tanks in Budapest history. He couldn’t show glee being born too late. He probably would rush out to welcome them next time when it comes round.”

Orban got his start in Hungarian politics in 1989 by making a speech at the Commemoration of the Heroes of 1956 Uprising. In that speech, Orban demanded free elections and the removal of Soviet troops.

Things have changed since 1989. Orban has figured that out. Putin has figured that out. Some of us on FR have figured it out.

But the Cold War Fossils and 1980’s nostalgists have, like the Bourbons, learned nothing and forgotten nothing.
