Mitt Romney and his moderate friends plan to leave Senate or face an uphill battle for reelection
Deseret News ^ | 12/30/23 | Gitanjali Poonia

A group of senators — four Republicans and four Democrats — ate takeout for dinner at Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s home during COVID-19, Romney said at an event with former House Speaker Paul Ryan. They sat six feet apart and discussed policy.

The Republicans in the group included Sens. Romney, Murkowski, Susan Collins of Maine and Rob Portman of Ohio. The Democrats were Sens. Kyrsten Sinema, who has since registered as an independent, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Jon Tester of Montana and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, as the Deseret News reported. This group was influential in the passage of several bipartisan bills like a COVID-19 stimulus bill under Trump, as well as the infrastructure bill, the CHIPS Act and the Respect for Marriage Act under Biden.

In September 2023, Romney said he won’t run for reelection and will finish serving in office in January 2025. At the time, he said, “I’m hoping that in the year and a half I have left that we’re going to be able to take on some of those issues, particularly as it relates to the deficit and debt and immigration,” he said.

His retirement coincides with many other moderate senators bowing out of running for reelection or facing an uphill battle to victory. The middle lane in Congress has been shrinking for decades, political science professor Michael Lyons at Utah State University told the Deseret News.

"at an event with former House Speaker Paul Ryan"

This insidious oligarch has his dirty fingers in everything.

Of the eight, hopefully only THREE will be left in January of 2025 (Collins, Murkowski and Shaheen, reelected in either 2020 or 2022)

Portman is already gone (retired in 2022)

Romney is already retiring

Manchin is already retiring

Sinema may be ousted

Tester may be ousted

There’s no class more dangerous than the professional politician class. Give me farmers, construction workers, small business owners and hunting outfitters any day.

“Give me farmers, construction workers, small business owners and hunting outfitters any day.”

Or as William Buckley put it, that he’d rather be governed by the first 200 names in the Boston phone book than all the faculty at Harvard.

It’s sort of like flushing the toilet but there’s still a lot of turds left.

Yes, for DECADES. As each decade has found new conservatives trying to fight back, and the Left, fearful of losing prior gains has moved even further to the Left. So, yes, the “middle ground” has been shrinking.

Not entirtely a bad thing.

They sat six feet apart and discussed policy.

😂😂

And they only lowered their masks for sips and bites, right?

This is the “gang of eight” scam. If they agree to vote together, they can swing legislation. It makes them more powerful because instead of being one of 100, they are one of eight.

“They all sat safely distanced apart.” Well, I saw Romney on several occasions in S Florida during the first months of covid. Maybe 6 times. Never once was he wearing a mask. He also wouldn’t look you in the eye when he walked past. Head down as if you wouldn’t recognize him.

Romney said, “I’m hoping that in the year and a half I have left that we’re going to be able to take on some of those issues, particularly as it relates to the deficit and debt and immigration, . . . “

How’s that work on the deficit going Senator Romney?
