Here's the real lie from the article: The data will be erased three years after it is collected for data protection reasons.

Imagine having the gall to put that in print.

They know that lies work very well on the general population.

The data will never disappear from various government databases. It likely will, however, be updated with more recent photos, addresses, cell phone numbers, etc.

There have been cases where governments have been sued and lost cases where they held personal data beyond authorized dates (under GDPR)
