LONDON (AP) – Thousands of doctors walked off the job in Britain on Wednesday, the start of a six-day strike that was set to be the longest in the history of the state-funded National Health Service.
Managers said tens of thousands scheduled appointments and operations will be canceled during the walkout across England and Wales by junior doctors, those in the first years of their careers. The doctors, who form the backbone of hospital and clinic care, plan to stay off the job until 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
Senior doctors and other medics have had to be drafted in to cover for emergency services, critical care and maternity services.

Will anybody notice?.......................
So now Brits will wait *two* years to see a cancer specialist rather then the typical one year.
Hideous. What a pack of hyenas.
My daughter has a good friend who is a young doctor in the UK. He earns a whopping $40,000 a year. No idea if he’s part of the strike.
Under socialized medicine doctors become slaves.
An occasional rebellion is a reminder of this reality.
Fair point. Maybe some of them should open a private practice.
Yet I keep seeing propaganda extolling the virtues of socialized medicine.
I just looked up the salary of a general practitioner in the UK. The average is £64,427, or about 81,287.55 USD. Why would someone want to be a physician if that’s all the compensation they can look forward to?
In Cuba, doctors usually have to drive cabs on the side to make ends meet.
“Why would someone want to be a physician if that’s all the compensation they can look forward to?”
To heal people?
Gail Macrae was a Kaiser nurse who was fired over questioning the Covid protocol.
Why do I bring her up? Under Trump’s health care plan I would put her in charge. It’s too much about money. Think of all the cowardly doctors who wouldn’t speak up. They’re like rinos. Something about evil and good men doing nothing.
Far fewer people will be killed by the NHS.
Also just to point out that GPs, who are not involved in this strike, are paid in a totally different way from that used for junior hospital doctors, who are. If they're partners in the GP practice, they aren't salaried, but their pay is dependent on the income the practice generates via its NHS contract. If they're salaried employees of the practice, again the salary is locally determined. Unlike hospitals, GP practices have always technically been independent contractors, even though their contract is solely with the NHS.
Addendum to previous post - I’ve just looked up he average salary of a GP partner, and it’s £140,000 - more than twice the figure you quote. For a salaried GP the range is from £65,000 to £98,000.
The inability of the NHS to meet waiting time targets for planned surgery led to an increase in the numbers paying personally for private operations.
According to LaingBuisson in 2018, the total private acute healthcare market is worth £1.47 billion (not including consulting or diagnostic work outside hospitals) and 40% of the demand is in London.
They can in London. Plenty of wealthy people living there. If you're outside of London, you're SOL. Everyone must deal with the NHS because it's the only game in the town.
Make a statement.
That’s decent money. Why do they have to get more than that?
