Europe experienced stark weather contrasts on Wednesday, with extreme cold and snowstorms disrupting transportation and closing schools in Scandinavia while strong winds and heavy rain in western Europe caused flooding and at least one death.
Temperatures fell below minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Nordic region for a second day in a row Wednesday. In Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka in Swedish Lapland, the mercury dropped to minus 43.6 C (minus 46.5 F), the lowest January temperature recorded in Sweden in 25 years, Sweden’s TT news agency reported.
Extremely cold temperatures, snow and gale-force winds disrupted transportation throughout the Nordic region, with several bridges closed and some train and ferry services suspended. Several schools in Scandinavia were closed.
The wave of cold air from Siberia and the Arctic region has also swept down over western Russia, with temperatures in Moscow and other areas plummeting to minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 F), well below the average temperature for early January.

That jet stream is a hell of a thing, ain’t it.
Weather is funny that way.
That’s true.
Indeed.
Which is colder, -40C or -40F?
Oh no! What if the cultural enrichers in Sweden get cold?
Will Greta let them build fires to stay warm or will that cause the planet to burst into flames?
You beat me to it. Of course, others would correct us and say pointedly “climate change.” Have any of the warmists said that the two theories are the same, or that the two theories are different? They should be put on record, then they can be picked to pieces.
If the gulf stream shuts down, Europe will freeze.
They’re the same since the scales meet at that point. Either way...very cold.
NH has been warmer than usual and we don’t have any snow either, although some is forecast starting Sunday.
But by then it’s a week into Jan. it’s going to make winter seem a lot shorter than usual.
Ukraine is next on the receiving end of this cold weather, be interesting to see whose equipment works in that weather (the Neocon hardware, or the Russian hardware).
Yes.
Isn’t it? It’s so unpredictable. But the catastrophe kooks KNOW we will avoid 0.1 degree change a hundred years from now only if we go full communist.
Hmmm…let me ponder that. It probably has something to do with Brownian Motion and Maxwell’s Equations.
Our forecast is for a sudden 20-25 degree drop in a week. Sounds like that arctic air ,ass is swinging over toward Canada and the USA.
Interesting you are seeing the same pattern.
The long-range winter forecast by the National Weather Service back around Sept or Oct predicted a big El Niño this year with warmer and drier than usual here in the NW. So far, they are correct.
There is a young lady weeping in Sweden.
