GOP House Member Announces Early Resignation From U.S. Congress: Republican Majority in Jeopardy

Republican Ohio Rep. Bill Johnson will resign from his position on Jan. 21 to take a job as president of Youngstown State University, according to multiple reports.

Johnson was expected to assume his new position at the university on March 15, WFMJ reported. His new start date comes earlier than expected (via WFMJ):

In his resignation letter sent to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, Johnson described the residents of his district as "proud and patriotic," but disregarded by America's "elites," which Johnson said included academics even  as he prepares to take over an academic institution.

"These blue-collar communities, like countless others in 'flyover county' were critical in building our great nation and will play a pivotal role in America's future. I am extremely humbled to have been repeatedly elected to serve them," Johnson said.

YSU Trustee Chairman Michael Peterson shared the news in a message to the university community.

"Bill brings a commitment to advancing our institution's mission, and we eagerly anticipate the contributions he and his wife LeeAnn will make to our community," Peterson reportedly said.

Johnson began representing Ohio’s sixth congressional district in 2011 and is an Air Force veteran.

On Thursday, Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) announced special election dates to fill the position in Congress. In June, the special congressional general election will take place.

In recent weeks, Johnson, as well as former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, resigned from Congress. Additionally, former New York Rep. George Santos was expelled from Congress.

These people who are leaving early are, IMHO, selfish and self-centered, not caring one whit if the balance of power shifts to democrats. And while we may be better off without them and those of their ilk, in government in the long run, in the short term they need to not upset the balance of power.

I smell a Paul Ryan-like move. The uniparty knows Trump will win. The next best thing is to lose the House so there can be another 4 years of investigation.

They haven’t done anything in a year. Why waste time. This congress has been the least productive in history. Why stay?

Because even though they haven’t accomplished much, it would be disastrous if democrats took control. You can bet they would get things done, and in a terrible way.

Yep! I wonder if McCarthy is behind all the mechanisms. REVENGE? They are intentionally doing it to hurt the base because the majority of them have a bad case of DTS! They are screwing ALL of us in case Trump wins. It has been projected we will lose the house next round. And again that botox bitch from hell demon will have control of the gravel! I hate the Republican RINOS spineless POS asses!

The last thing R’s want is responsibility. They’ve given up and are just along for ride now.

I guess they figure if they can’t give everything over to the democrats while in power, they’ll just give the power to the democrats. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Screw the gutless, cowardly GOP.

Typical GOP. Things like this are the reason the GOP is a failure at everything they do. Unlike the RATs who stick together no matter the consequences. The GOP doesn’t give a damn about the Party. If Trump wins he’ll have to deal with the RATS and a feckless GOP.

This congress has been the least productive in history.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Exactly what do you want Congress to "produce"?

(BTW, I have an answer to that question, but I await yours first ...)

The RNC and GOP is kind of relieved. They don’t want to have any of the responsibilities that come with a conservative majority. Just coast along and watch their stocks and other “investments”. Don’t need the peasants to nag them to take action.

He deserves to get fired.

I could maybe see someone changing their mind partway through a six year Senate term, but not a term of only two years in the House. Democraps would NEVER do anything like this!!! Yet, what is this, the fourth or fifth person we’ve lost in the House this term?

House republicans are spineless!

The Swamp is co owned..

The GOP co owns it..

The balance of power needs to be removed from the Swamp.

Govt of the swamp, by the swamp, for the swamp needs to perish from this earth..

That comes with both of the modern GOP and Dem Swamp parties losing their power..

Please recall that Maxine Walters actually bragged that Barack Obama compiled the most extensive data base..."...in history". They are most likely compromised/blackmailed.

This crap will continue on and on...
