Speaking to CNN and adhering to the left’s narrative regarding January 6th is a “tell” in itself.
I truly wish DeSantis hadn’t done this to himself. Up to recently, I really admired him and I do think he has been a good governor of Florida. But, who is his advisors that think alienating and vilifying Trump supporters is a good idea?
The divide between the left and the right at this point is not just policy differences. It is an fight for the very ideals upon which our country was founded. To side with the left and their media mouthpieces in regards to Trump, the 2020 election, and the happenings on January 6, 2021, speaks loudly as to one’s priorities and future vision for our country.
DeSantis and Haley both seem to wish for our nation to return to the point where the left wins while the GOP gives a few campaign promises and remain in the losing lane. Let’s just all pretend the past few years didn’t happen. Let’s pretend the deep state didn’t go after Trump with everything they had including the Trump/Russia collusion Clinton created conspiracy. Let’s pretend the FBI/DOJ didn’t promote and participate in that conspiracy. Let’s just leave all those participates in their cushy government positions and let bygones be bygones.
The GOP candidates with the exception of one wants to just discount all the voters that saw the 2020 election corruption. They have joined the left’s “insurrection” narrative of January 6th and ignored all evidence showing otherwise. If Trump is not the GOP nominee this fall, I’m going to have a hard time pulling the lever for any other candidate.
No wonder DeSantis’s supporters think he’s more electable than Trump. He’s clearly distancing himself from Trump’s “scary” MAGA supporters. That’s the kind of talk the Establishment loves to here. THAT’s somebody they can get behind and support. He represents business as usual, to them.
In the olden days when GOP voters were slaves to the establishment, that was the only kind of GOP candidate that had a chance of being elected. Note to those on Free Republic who push this “more electable” argument. You are living in a bygone era to which the MAGA wing of the GOP will never go back. The only electable Republican is one whose loyalty is to the populist base - by far the largest block of the party - and can also appeal to large numbers outside the party. That describes only one candidate - Donald Trump.

His irrational premise - that he could be both MAGA and not MAGA at the same time - was always doomed to failure, so long as his deception was exposed. Triangulation. That’s the strategy of the professional political class. Promise different, conflicting things to different segments of the electorate and hope you can cobble together enough sub-groups to win. None of the sub-groups would particularly like you but since the other party was doing the same thing it was a question of which candidate was less disliked than the other.
Most of the presidents from the past 50 years or so were elected this way. Trump is the rare exception.
