There’s a documentary called “Behind the Curve” in which a group of people who think the Earth is flat decided to test their hypothesis. They spend something like $20,000 on a laser gyroscope, and run some tests, and lo and behold, they learn that the Earth, contrary to their assumptions, is in fact round. Their response was exactly what you’d expect. At first they didn’t want to believe it, they started rationalizing away the experiment. “We were taken aback by that,” one of the men said. He added: “We obviously were not willing to accept that.”
That documentary came out a few years ago. It was an interesting look at human psychology and how people respond when their own actions debunk their whole worldview (literally their worldview, in the case of the flat-earthers). It’s not an easy thing to experience. It’s one thing for someone else to prove you wrong. It’s something else entirely to disprove your own ideology, and to reveal how bankrupt and nonsensical it is.
It’s easy to point and laugh at flat-earthers, but this is a phenomenon we’re seeing more often these days. In fact, it’s been playing out for the whole country over the past few weeks, as proponents of diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI, have witnessed the complete implosion of the president of Harvard University, Claudine Gay.

To a normal person it would be an issue. We are talking far left loons though. They do not care.
Any undergrad student of mine who did anything like Gay did would be expelled from the course, if not the college.
There was one college, which is now defunct, that I taught for about 20 years ago—for one semester. I had a class where 1/3 of the student plagiarized their papers, and the school rule was very strict, the students were to receive zeros for their paper, so I gave then all zeros. Turned out I was the first prof to have ever done this, and I did not teach there again.
In the pursuit of wealth and power, a deficit in intelligence is more than compensated by a deficit in morality.
When the left pushed the narrative that 2+2 can equal 5 I knew we were in trouble.
When they pushed the belief that truth is subjective and is not absolute I knew satan was behind all of it....DEI, trans perversion, and the rest of it is straight out of hell.
Their stupidity and ineffectuality are our only defense against tyranny.
“When the left pushed the narrative that 2+2 can equal 5 I knew we were in trouble.”
But 2+2 Does equal 5....for bloated values of 2, as 2 approaches 2.5. (One has to take into consideration woke math.)
Were you outed or did you quit? Obviously, rules are rules. If you don’t agree with them, you have choices. It becomes very difficult only if rules are found to be wrong & have to be changed. Otherwise it should be a simple matter of following the rules.
That is one piece of work.
I believe it is called cognitive dissonance. When your existence is tied to a belief or sometimes a person it is very hard, even with proof, to change you positions.
Though not quite the same, as they admitted they had proved themselves wrong, the left is very much like this. They will never admit anything they believe is wrong, to do so would mean they would have to look at all their beliefs which may also be wrong, they never will and their responses to facts are always the same racist, nazi ,some sort of phobic……
One guy took a flat farther up in a high altitude ballon, the guys response “I did not see enough of a curvature to change my mind. Wonder if even a trip into space would change his mind
That is how powerful beliefs can be
It’s tough to find out that everything you’ve believed for your entire life is wrong.
I am glad to have retired and no longer have to have anything to do with academia.
I’m the same way. I used to think that projection of power and free trade were hallmarks of conservatism, but now I’m told that it’s isolationism and protectionism. I’m having a hard time with it, but I think with a little effort I can soon come to love Big Brother.
This plagiarism ‘problem’ comes up about once or twice a year in Germany. Some foundation picks a politician with a PhD, and runs their thesis through a system...to accuse them. Typically, nine out of ten can’t defend the situation, and the college yanks their degree.
A second foundation has gotten into this, and what one can figure out...all of this started with a group who wanted a few ‘right-of-center’ folks out of politics. The second group is mostly a retaliation unit...hitting left-of-center’ politicians.
It’s rare that one survives the accusation.
Projection of power is fine when you are projecting positive human values that will make life better for everyone on the planet.
It is negative when you are fighting to make the world safe for perverts and kleptocrats.
You bring up an interesting point, to me.
What Conservatives have to contend with, I believe, is things like elementary school math teaches things like, “2 + 2 = 4”, which are important to learn. Only later in life does the student learn that, in the real world, “2” is rarely just 2.
How people assimilate this is what the Left capitalizes on. Most can probably accept that mathematics is theoretical. A great many, however, experience what another poster identified as “cognitive dissonance” and, when they learn that sometimes “2” is not just 2, they decide that it never is, and that Mathematics must just be the White Patriarchy, or some such nonesense.
I was going to quit, and they were not going to offer me any more courses, so it was a mutual divorce.
It is impossible to come from an extremely wealthy family in Haiti without being extremely corrupt.
In the USA, you can become wealthy by producing wealth. In Haiti, if you are not part of those who corruptly rule, it is impossible.
Like Monica Crowley.
People will fight more violently to preserve self-image than life itself. "Death before dishonor" Which is why it is exceeding to hard to admit that you were wrong. Once you admit and accept your own fallibility, life becomes much better, unless you become an immoral sociopath, like Bill Clinton. You need to balance humility with self-respect and your own moral compass.
