The Criticism Surrounding the NY Mayor's Wardrobe Seems Nothing Short Of Racist—Just Ask Al Sharpton

There are a lot of reasons to criticize New York City Mayor Eric Adams—but his wardrobe really shouldn’t isn’t one of them—according to Civil Rights leader Al Sharpton.

A new story in the New York Times style section takes a deep dive into Adams’ tailored outfits and asks: How does he “maintain a collection of bespoke suits on a mayor’s salary?”

Legendary civil rights activist Al Sharpton also chimed in on the bizarre and unfair scrutiny.

“This nonsense about who pays for his suits and what kind of suits he wears . . . that’s the same game y’all played with [David] Dinkins,” Sharpton reporterdly stated during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Harlem on Monday. “When he was wearing too many tuxedos, and going to too many events, I guess black men are supposed to walk around with ripped jeans and showing their underwear?

“Let us judge the man the way you judge any other man in the United States by his work and his wardrobe.”

Bespoke suits are an improvement over the plus size tracksuits and sewer lid sized medallions of yore, eh rev Al?

Al Sharpton in interview:
Interviewer:As television’s most sharply dressed newsman, Sharpton boasts a collection of suits unlike anyone on the tube. He makes three-piece suits look effortless, knows how to rock a double-breasted jacket better than anyone, and is living proof that every man needs a windowpane suit.

Later, Sharpton:
And then when I was 18, I became very close to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, who was very much flamboyant. Growing up between the Black church and show business, you tend to know what the flamboyant side is. So I have that mixed in with the fact that I lead a national civil rights organization and host a national television show. You want to not be so flamboyant that you’re not taken seriously. But you don’t want to be so serious that you’re dull.

Years ago when he lost weight Sharpton started appearing in very expensive suits.

When asked where he got the money for such extravagance, he said “a friend” gave him the suits.

Yeah, sure he had “a friend” with suits tailored to Al’s exact measurements.

Well it is a curiosity that a policeman’s and mayor’s wardrobe is so nice. I live near a couple married cops they live quite large. Lots of overtime and one of them has a senior position so I guess they take home close to $300,000 a year.

Nevertheless, I don’t mind the mayor’s attire I think he should dress nicely and in NYC, you used to be able to get some nice clothes down on 7th Avenue. Mick Jagger sang about it on the song Shattered. Maybe he’s got a “sweet deal” but as far as corruption goes a deal on wardrobe isn’t high on the list of concerns.

Mayor Adams also is a vegetarian. As he tells it, he had diabetes, and doctors told him he would go blind and have to be on medication all his life. He changed his diet and reversed his diabetes and kept his vision. He claims he never took the medication. How much of that is true vs folk stories he tells who knows? But it is clear he takes his appearance and personal health and hygiene seriously.

...I don’t mind the mayor’s attire...

Mayor Eric Adams dresses appropriately for the clown show he's in.
