Updated information on Mass Public Shootings from 1998 through October 2023

When another shooting happens at a place such as a school or a mall, politicians and the media are apt to claim that many hundreds of mass shootings occur each year. “Over the last year since Uvalde, our country has experienced a staggering 650 mass shootings,” President Joe Biden claimed last year. After a shooting in Lewiston, Maine in late October, CNN said that there had already been “586 mass shootings” that year.

These statements give an incorrect impression that there are massacres every day, like the infamous 2022 Uvalde shooting, which claimed the lives of nineteen students and two teachers, or the one in Lewiston, which claimed eighteen lives.

The numbers cited by Biden and CNN come from the Gun Violence Archive, which broadly defines mass shootings to include any case with four or more people shot or injured. The injuries could occur in the course of running away, and not from actually being shot. However, the GVA has also included cases with only three injured people (e.g., a July 22, 2023 attack at a residence at 10700 Rosehaven Dr, Houston, Texas.

There is a reason that Uvalde got the news coverage it did, and you don’t hear about these other 600 cases. What makes these attacks newsworthy is that the shooter tries to kill as many people as possible in a public place. The FBI active shooting reports concentrate on shootings that occur in public and do not involve some other crime such as robbery. Traditionally, the FBI has classified

Very thorough work by John Lott's organization.

Lots of links and other graphs showing the actual statistics that the gun-grabbing media/politicians will twist to fit their own agenda.

This is definitely worth bookmarking.

For what it's worth there were 6,578 single person murders in 2019 (the last year we have data on). In the main article of this post, it says that 54 people were murdered in mass murder (defined as 4 or more people murdered in an event).

By my math, less than 1% of all murder victims are victims of mass murder. The other 99% of murder victims aren't getting any attention.

Uvalde did not have to happen. If the grownups and authorities were doing their damn jobs, they could have stopped this crazy psycho POS from killing anybody. It took an off-duty Border Patrolman whose wife and child were in the building to take charge and to put the psychotic rabid dog out of his misery.

Does this include the definitions which vary? One is any discharge of a weapon in which the round in the nearby neighborhood goes into the school property, such as a party or revenge shooting at a house or lawn by urban types with a stray shot going somewhere. The statistic would make these look like a wimpy mentally nerd shooting everyone who shunned him in class.

Still hard to decipher if that stuff about running away and up to 3 people shot at a “residence” answers what I said about shots from other residential places that go across the school lawn.

Maybe definition should be limited to someone with intent to kill people with a firearm at a school and discharges a weapon at the school.

“Mass public shootings” would also include places like shopping malls, churches, theaters, and bowling alleys, but typically exclude private residences which aren’t open to the general public.
