Why attacks on Yemen offer Houthis a 'golden opportunity'

The current escalation between Yemen's Houthi militia and the US-led naval coalition in the Red Sea serves the Iran-backed militants in several ways. In fact, it is even welcomed, according to some analysts.

"The Houthis have been looking for an opportunity for confrontation with the United States," Hisham al-Omeisy, Yemen conflict analyst and former director of Washington's Information Research Center for Yemen, told DW.

"For the past eight years, they've been telling their followers that they are at war with the US and with Israel, so this is a golden opportunity for them that they need to capitalize on," al-Omeisy added.

Yemen's infrastructure has been badly damaged and the conflict has plunged the population into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Houthis — officially called Ansar Allah — are in talks with Saudi Arabia over a long-term cease-fire. Later in January, US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking is expected to finalize a peace deal between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

"By forcing the Saudis to accept them [as the national government of Yemen], the Houthis hope that the rest of the world will follow and grant them international legitimacy," al-Omeisy said.

Up until now, only Iran has recognized the Houthis as the legitimate government of Yemen, Thomas Juneau, an associate professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada and a Middle East analyst, told DW.

"They want to force the international community to deal with them by hijacking ships, by sending missiles, by negotiating with Saudi Arabia, and they want to be seen as having established themselves as a key member in the Iran-led 'Axis of Resistance,'" he said, referring to the network of Iran-backed groups across the region that are opposed to the United States and Israel.

Oh...right.

If they were walking into a cave looking for a puppy it might be easy. But if they go into the cave and a bear appears it changes the game.

It should be a golden opportunity to wipe these POS’s off the face of the Earth. Imagine thinking you can take on the whole world by attacking such an important shipping route. Insane!

Insane is right.

As a culture Arab muslims are mentally and emotionally like an eight year old boy raised by a violent alcoholic father.

The Bible predicted all this for the descendants of Ishmael

Call me crazy, but attacking the USA is not a sound method for obtaining recognition of your government.

More likely they will end up like the barbary pirates did 200 years ago. As they should.

However we need to stop using $1 million interceptions to take out $2000 Iranian drones. Not cost effective. Take out the factories and the ayatollah.

Yemen is only a couple of centuries removed from the stone age. Level Sanaa and bid its return.

“Yemen is only a couple of centuries removed from the stone age.”

But they have friends. The foreign relations of Yemen are the relationships and policies that Yemen maintains with other countries. It is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. As you can see, it is an arab leaning country strong in islam connections with backing of the UN. Bad juju there.

Of 80,000 soldiers sent to Yemen from Egypt between 1539 and 1547, only 7,000 survived.[125] The Ottoman accountant-general in Egypt remarked:[125]

We have seen no foundry like Yemen for our soldiers. Each time we have sent an expeditionary force there, it has melted away like salt dissolved in water.

Declare War on the Houthis, and give them the “Japan” treatment, with B-52 carpet bombing of western Yemen, to create a “buffer zone,” for the sake of World Order and Shipping.
