During the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Annual Meeting, Administrator Samantha Power continued her focus on expanding USAID’s partnerships with the private sector to address critical global challenges and issued a global call to action to eliminate toxic lead from consumer products.

On Wednesday, January 17, Administrator Power, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Tanzania's Minister of Labour, Economic Affairs, and Investment Mudrick Soragha, and McKinsey’s Lucy Pérez discussed the path toward a lead free future. Lead poisoning, an invisible and often overlooked global health threat, kills more than 1.6 million people each year, but efforts to curtail lead poisoning in low- and middle-income countries only receive about $15 million each year.

Following the event, the Administrator and Prime Minister Garibashvili discussed USAID’s long-standing support for Georgia and programs aimed at strengthening its democracy, economic growth, and Euro-Atlantic trajectory.

Administrator Power also met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to discuss the importance of sustainable and inclusive growth, civil society, and anti-corruption initiatives that are improving the lives of the Cambodian people. Also on Wednesday, Administrator Power met with Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane to discuss opportunities to strengthen the Zambian economy.

Administrator Power then convened agriculture executives for a discussion on how to increase recruitment of H-2A workers from Northern Central America. She concluded her day by raising awareness about the global threat of lead poisoning at a gathering of global and philanthropic leaders.

On Thursday, January 18, Administrator Power met with United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron to discuss a range of areas that the United States and United Kingdom are deeply cooperating on, including the Middle East and Ukraine. The Administrator and the Foreign Secretary discussed the vital need to increase humanitarian assistance and commercial goods for the Palestinian people and the importance of protecting civilians in Gaza.

She then joined private sector leaders, including the CEOs of Unilever and EY, in a roundtable discussion on tackling the plastic pollution crisis, a key component of USAID’s Save Our Seas Initiative. More than 12 million metric tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year.

On the margins of meetings at Davos, Administrator Power spoke with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan about the United States’ strong support for the people of Armenia and the country’s democracy.

Additionally, Administrator Power met with Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti, where USAID works directly with the people of Kosovo to strengthen regional stability and energy security. Administrator Power also spoke with Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean about the ongoing regional impacts of Russia’s war against Ukraine and reiterated U.S. support for Moldova’s integrity and independence.

On Thursday afternoon, Administrator Power hosted a roundtable with leading financial institutions to identify opportunities to de-risk private sector investments into African countries. She was joined by British Robinson, Coordinator for Prosper Africa, a U.S. Government initiative that stimulates trade and investment between the United States and African countries.

Samantha Power was sworn into office as the 19th Administrator of USAID on May 3, 2021.

In leading the world’s premier international development agency and its global staff of over 10,000 people, Power will focus on helping the United States respond to four interconnected challenges: the COVID-19 pandemic and the development gains it has imperiled; climate change; conflict and humanitarian crises; and democratic backsliding. Power will also ensure that USAID enhances its longstanding leadership in areas including food security, education, women’s empowerment, and global health. Additionally, Power is the first USAID Administrator to be a member of the National Security Council, where she will ensure that development plays a critical role in America’s responses to a range of economic, humanitarian, and geopolitical issues.

Prior to joining the Biden-Harris Administration, Power was the Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and the William D. Zabel Professor of Practice in Human Rights at Harvard Law School. From 2013 to 2017, Power served in the Obama-Biden Administration as the 28th US Permanent Representative to the United Nations. During her time at the UN, Power rallied countries to combat the Ebola epidemic, ratify the Paris climate agreement, and develop new international law to cripple ISIS’s financial networks. She worked to negotiate and implement the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals, helped catalyze bold international commitments to care for refugees, and advocated to secure the release of political prisoners, defend civil society from growing repression, and protect the rights of women and girls.

From 2009 to 2013, Power served on the National Security Council staff as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. At the NSC, she advised the Obama-Biden Administration on issues such as democracy promotion, UN reform, LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, atrocity prevention, and the fights against human trafficking and global corruption.

An immigrant from Ireland, Power began her career as a war correspondent in Bosnia, and went on to report from places including Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. She was the founding executive director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, and has been recognized as one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People,” one of Foreign Policy’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers,” and by Forbes as one of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” Power is an author and editor of multiple books, and the recipient of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.

Power earned a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

USAID is one of the earliest festering boils of anti-Americanism and corruption among bureaus at Mordor On The Potomac.

There is very little, if any accountability for USAID. It is a wonderful way to obtain graft and kickbacks. Once the money has been given out to foreign actors, it is gone.

It would appear that Sullivan and Kamala Harris learned how to (not) talk from the same teacher.

Great links. Thank you.

Glad to post them. These globalist elitists really are nuts.
People better realize that they are influencing a lot of governments which makes them very dangerous nuts.

That is, if people like eating food ... for starters.

President Trump, eliminate this boondoggle and while you’re at it cut off foreign aid.

Here is the part I do not understand. Why is the govt using taxpayer funds going to non-govt functions? I was a govt employee and traveled a lot- a whole lot. But I never went on travel without a specific govt focused requirement. Has anyone asked what specific govt function requires their presence?
