As a Florida resident now and two occasions before I understand what you are saying. But no one has ever explained how like magic the cost to rebuild multiplied by a factor of five within two months of a hurricane. There is and was price fixing and gouging and no one in FL gov did a damn thing.

“ But no one has ever explained how like magic the cost to rebuild multiplied by a factor of five within two months of a hurricane.”

Let me break it down for you.

“Supply and demand”. After a hurricane the demand for labor and materials increases tremendously while the supply of those things is relatively fixed in comparison, at least for a while.

Therefore the price goes up.

You don’t have to be Milton Friedman to figure that out.

Good plywood used to cost $8-10 per sheet. During lockdowns the same stuff hit $60-80. Each. They’re down to maybe $30 now, so it’s still crazy expensive compared to a couple years ago.

And every other piece of lumber has gone up just as much!
