The state with the highest taxes is New York. New York is one of the states with highest income tax rates as well as high sales tax rates, high property taxes, and high excise taxes.
I’ve told this story before, but it’s a good one.
I grew up in Ithaca, NY from 1960-1965. Before that we were in Thornwood in Westchester County, then in Utica, and finally in Syracuse. When I was about 12 in Ithaca (about 1963 - 60 years ago!), I remember Dad and his buddies grousing one Saturday afternoon about NYS taxes and how much of their money went to NYC. It’s my first political memory. Some things don’t change and some states just don’t learn.
One of my Dad’s buddies lived on “Texas Lane” in Ithaca. He has one of those address things on top of his mailbox where you insert the number and street name. He swapped the “e” and “a” so it read “120 Taxes Lane.” I proudly went up to him and said “Mr. Smith, you goofed on the address on your mailbox. You spelled ‘Texas’ wrong.” All the men got a good laugh out of the green kid not knowing it was on purpose!
