NJ Transit proposes massive 15% fare hikes as MTA chair taunts NJ Gov. Phil Murphy for budget hole

NJ Transit wants to hike fares an eye-popping 15% but may still face a massive budget hole in a year – a dire situation that has the head of the MTA mocking the Garden State’s governor.

MTA chairman Janno Lieber roasted New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday over his transit budgeting chaos, taking a dig at one of the most vocal critics of the planned congestion toll in Manhattan.

“Phil Murphy said he was gonna fix New Jersey Transit if it kills him,” Lieber told New York state lawmakers during a budget hearing in Albany. “I’m not sure. He’s not dying, and I’m not even sure if he’s trying.

“It is disappointing that a governor that prided himself on Al Gore’s endorsement has left New Jersey Transit unfunded for reasons we don’t fully understand,” he later added.

NJ Transit exists to funnel workers to and from Manhattan.

Workers don’t want to work in Manhattan anymore or spend time and money getting there.

What the English governments do is to decide the level of transit service desired.

The bus routes (by timeframe) are then individually bid out with the company requiring the least subsidy winning the route.

I don’t know how English commuter rail is set up financially.

The rail tracks are government owned. Private train companies run long distance service. Each day a lead operator on a line sets daily walk-up pricing. Advance tickets can be bought online at what I think is attractive pricing.

Office space vacancy rate is 22% in North Jersey and 20% in Central Jersey. There’s no reason to commute to NYC when it’s cheaper to get office space in NJ.

And the workers can avoid commuting expenses and NY State and City income taxes.

There are European train operating companies.

Perhaps NJ Transit people and Murphy should make a few phone calls.

Round trip tickets from Morristown or New Brunswick to NY Penn Station are $28 for an adult round trip.

Monthly passes are discounted, but might not be a bargain if you only need to be in the office 2 or 3 days per week.

A company in Midtown might have staffers from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Bergen, Essex, Morris and Monmouth counties.

For them to all get to a New Jersey office would be difficult without paying for relocation. Relocation is often impractical because many workers might have mortgages under 4% and even under 3%.

Larger companies often have branch offices in NJ and Westchester already. Now that we’ve learned how to work from home, working out of a branch office is easy to set up.

In my last office job, I was working with people in other states more than I worked with people in the same building. Before being employed by them, I had worked from home as a consultant for them. Commuting to the office was a waste of time and money.

In my industry, every major company with a NYC office also has an office in northern or central New Jersey (and sometimes both).
