ATMORE, Ala. (WAFF) - The State of Alabama executed death row inmate Kenneth Smith on Thursday at the Holman Correctional Facility.
The 58-year-old Smith was put to death with nitrogen gas, the first time that method was used in the United States.
Smith is one of two men convicted in the 1988 murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett.
Prosecutors said he and the other man were each paid $1,000 to kill Sennett on behalf of her pastor husband, who was deeply in debt and wanted to collect on insurance.
Sennett, 45, was found dead March 18, 1988, in her home with eight stab wounds in the chest and one on each side of her neck, according to the coroner.
Her husband, Charles Sennett Sr., killed himself when the investigation focused on him as a suspect, according to court documents.
John Forrest Parker, the other man convicted in the slaying, was executed in 2010.
Smith was previously scheduled to be executed in 2022 via a lethal injection but the execution was botched.

On March 18, 1988, 45-year-old Elizabeth Sennett’s life was brutally taken from her by Kenneth Eugene Smith. After more than 30 years and attempt after attempt to game the system, Mr. Smith has answered for his horrendous crimes.
The execution was lawfully carried out by nitrogen hypoxia, the method previously requested by Mr. Smith as an alternative to lethal injection. At long last, Mr. Smith got what he asked for, and this case can finally be put to rest.
I pray that Elizabeth Sennett’s family can receive closure after all these years dealing with that great loss.

Respiratory distress is caused by the inability to exhale carbon dioxide. Hypoxia is painless, and even causes a mild almost euphoric high. (I know from personal experience.) That is why hypoxia is called insidious. You’re usually dead before you know what’s happening.
Nitrogen hypoxia has been used to euthanize animals for decades. It also has the advantage of not using dangerous chemicals.
Alabama knows how to do executions on the cheap. The former electric chair Yellow mama was built by an inmate and painted with highway center striping paint that was available.
They could suck the air out of his chamber also. They do that to teach future pilots what hypoxia feels like....only they don’t take you to the point of passing out.
Other murderer in the murder plot was executed a while back per article. Pastor (guy who ordered hit) committed suicide

So many of these ‘church leaders’ are found guilty of murder, pedophilia, running off with church money. Good grief how as a man of God do these guys do this stuff?!

That was my first thought as well. In most articles I read on this subject, the victim is mentioned hardly at all. As a matter of fact, in most stories the scumbag is presented as the victim. The husband was such a coward that he took his own life and left the hired-hands to face the punishment. It’s way past time this particular scumbag was dispatched to his future eternity.
