Executives spent the better part of three years enticing, coaxing, cajoling, asking, and then finally demanding their employees return to the office.
White-collar employees wanted the flexibility to work remotely, while companies decided coming to the office was non-negotiable, and lax suggestions to return to the office eventually became clear directives—even threats. In the latest example of the latter, Bank of America recently sent “letters of education” to workers who repeatedly skipped out on the office, warning them that a failure to come in within the next two weeks could lead to “further disciplinary action.”
For as much as some bosses hate it when people refuse to come in, workers hate being forced to have to return to their offices, according to a new study from the University of Pittsburgh. Companies that issued return-to-office mandates to their employees experienced no improvement in financial performance, 99% of them saw a drop in employees’ overall job satisfaction, according to the research, which examined 137 S&P 500 firms between June 2019 and January 2023.

The people who don’t complete work from home don’t complete work in the office either.
They also waste people’s time and file HR complaints.
The Decision Makers screwed up. They all handled COVID incorrectly. They panicked and forced people to change their lives.
Now the Decision Makers have to live with the consequences of their over-reaction.
The big lesson might be: in the future don’t let Fear drive the society. And part of that lesson is: When the Big Boss tells you to return to the office “or else” the proper response is “Screw you; I am not afraid of you.”
How is getting paid to stay at home not popular?

More BS from leftist FORTUNE magazine. It is a shame, as FORTUNE was once respected.
Personally, I would like to read a story about those employees who willingly went back to the office building when their boss told them to do so.
And for those employees who willingly went back to the office, how they were all promoted and filled the higher level jobs vacated by the snowflakes who chose to remain at home.
Except in cases of an extremely long commute or in severe weather, I really don’t get why someone would insist on having to work from home. Really, who wouldn’t want to get out of the house for a time, even to go to work?
Jobs are not based on employee satisfaction. Very few people work as well at home as when supervised. Why do I say that? Because very few students do as well using just online classes as showing up in person.
SOME do, but that number is not close to 50%.
I serve on the board of directors of a company that was pushing to force its employees back into the office. At a meeting last year we had 11 of 12 board members in favor of the harder line, with me being the only holdout. By the end of the meeting I had convinced the others to back off — by making the exact same point that you did: ”WE are the ones who made these people think the way they do.”
DUH. Give them Friday's off then a year later tell them they need to start working Fridays again and you get the same result. Why even bother with s stupid survey like this.
Find better employees.

We want managers to figure out to how to properly measure and monitor remote work.

If that’s a thing, I wasn’t aware of it. I’ll try to remember going forward. I would have thought that since their watermark is on it that it would be okay
I worked from home the whole time by company policy and my site (Large Corporation) actually had increased productivity. We are in NY and people without the commute were willing to work more and I will generally say the atmosphere was a lot calmer. I now do 2 days a week in the office and I can tell the moral is way down.
Yes no more arrive late and leave early workers blocking the hall ways.
