I realize women have been in the military for a long time, but they were limited to support roles and not combat roles unless the combat came to them.

Being a colonel or even general does not necessarily imply combat, especially if the organization is a logistical one.

I clearly remember women arguing to be able to participate in combat roles because they felt that being sidelined to logistical support meant that they were less likely to advance their military careers.

If women have been participating in combat even before the discusson on ERA, then this is just another data point suggesting that we have been living under a bureaucratic oligarchy for even longer than most have supposed.

But then again, many of the colonies were started as oligarchies, most of which were theocratic. So it's no surprise that we have regressed to the mean.
