Speaker Johnson Rejects Pending Border Deal: Illegal Crossings ‘Must Be ZERO’
NTD ^ | 01/30/2024 | Jackson Richman

Posted on 01/30/2024 2:51:49 PM PST by thegagline

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has made clear where House Republicans will draw the line on any agreement dealing with the border: allowing illegal crossings.

“Any border ‘shutdown’ authority that ALLOWS even one illegal crossing is a non-starter. Thousands each day is outrageous. The number must be ZERO,” Mr. Johnson wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Jan. 29.

The deal, whose text is set to be released this week, reportedly would permit the president to close ports of entry if illegal crossings reach a certain threshold.

One of the negotiators, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), announced on Jan. 28 that a proposal was almost ready.

“This bill could be ready to be on the floor of the United States Senate next week,” he said on CNN, “but it won’t be if Republicans decide that they want to keep this issue unsettled for political purposes.”

The White House called on Congress to give the president the ability to protect the border.

“Until recently, Mr. Johnson advocated for HR2 because, in his view, presidents needed new legal authorities in order to secure the border,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a memo.

*** “But make no mistake, President Biden pledged on Friday to ‘shut down the border. However, with the stroke of a pen, he could begin by restoring Remain in Mexico, ending catch and release, [and] reforming asylum and parole standards. His refusal places our national sovereignty at stake.” ***

Okay, but Venezuelans as part of illegal immigrant "caravans" can be counted in the thousands, not millions.

Venezuelans are suffering from severe poverty, which I don't think is grounds, by itself, qualifies for asylum.

They *are* executing some in Venezuela, so that is (again, objectively) a cause for seeking asylum.

Why they aren’t stopping in the first safe country instead of coming here (though some *are* flying direct to the US now) is another discussion entirely.

FYI: https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/09/18/venezuela-extrajudicial-killings-poor-areas

And, per a Honduran friend (who, before you jump to conclusions, is staying in Honduras and not illegally immigrating), it isn’t just the poor areas getting extrajudicial killings. Apparently the regime is slowly and sporadically working their way down the list of the remaining people in the country that were opposed to Chavism... or even were part of the groups that kept the country running under the prior administration but who are now “not performing their patriotic duty and working for the people of Venezuela instead of the capitalists” - especially including the former oil field workers that were there.

Again, that is only a fraction of the millions of people showing up at the border claiming asylum.

The Biden administration is saying that they need the bill in Congress to be passed because they need many more agents to process asylum seekers into the United States.

You're not going to convince me that Biden needs Congress to pass his bill to get more asylum processors because of Venezuelan and Honduran killings. Those are a tiny fraction of the mass of people invading the border claiming asylum.

I didn’t say anything like that. I am simply pointing out that there is one valid cause for people from that area to seek asylum; specifically people fleeing Venezuela due to the depredations of their government. Honduras hasn’t devolved to killings yet and still does not qualify. You asked if there was a valid case for anywhere down there, I was just answering your question.

No, Biden does not need a bill to be passed to process the Venezuelans. He needs to do his damn job with the resources already allotted to him and then there wouldn’t be so much of a problem that he needs additional processors.

True, I asked if there were wars and killings that we didn't know about, and you pointed out two.

To be clear, I didn't think I needed to add "...that explains the hoard of asylum seekers flooding the border."

I'm not picking a fight with you. I'm amused that Biden didn't need new power to do what he did in the first month of office, but he needs new power to undo what he did in the first month in office.

There is a *lot* of stuff going on south of Mexico that our media just refuses to cover. El Salvador has declared open war on their criminal gangs, for example, and they’re doing pretty damn well so far. The refugees from *that* are not ones we should be letting in.

The reason he (or whoever is puppeteering him) wants this power is the same thing that happened with DOMA - the power to enforce is the power to pervert and destroy. Give Biden more exclusive powers? Guess what, now he can choose to not use it and block anyone else from attempting to.

Astoundingly, Biden recently proclaimed,
<><>I’ve done all I can do to secure the US-Mexico border.
<><>Just give me the power. I’ve asked from the very day I got into office.
<><>give me the Border Patrol,
<><>give me the people, the judges —
<><>give me the people who can stop this and make it work right.

Yes, you heard right.

Said by an idiot who let millions of diseased, military aged men, terrorist-types who want to harm us, from Third world hellholes, freely pour across our border into our neighborhoods to wallow at the public trough and live off taxpayers.

This simpleton (with a matching vice president), lives in a world with no newspapers, no internet, and no salient people with memories.

On Day One, Biden’s inaugural day, he introduced policies that incentivize illegal immigration:

• Paused Deportations

• Suspended “Remain in Mexico”

• Stopped Border Wall Construction

Since Biden’s policy changes, over 8 million people have illegally entered the country, with millions more slipping past border patrol undetected. This surge in illegal immigration is a national security crisis, costing American taxpayers hundreds of billions per year. Major U.S. cities, grappling with the escalating financial burden, are slashing budgets for essential services such as fire, police, and education.

President Biden holds the power to halt this crisis that is draining America’s resources and endangering its citizens. The solution is as simple as the actions that led to this crisis—Biden should use his pen to reverse his executive orders. He once said: “No great nation can be in a position where they can’t control their borders. It matters how you control your borders. Not just for immigration, but it matters for drugs, terror, and a whole range of things.”

— Joe Biden

Biden Has The Power To End The Border Crisis Without Congress. He Just Doesn’t Want To
The Federalist ^ | 01/30/2024 | Jordan Boyd

snip

During his first hours in the Oval Office on Jan. 20, 2021, Biden halted construction on Trump’s border wall. The former vice president also rescinded the Republican’s executive order refusing federal funding to “sanctuary” cities harboring illegal migrants, discouraged the immediate removal of illegal border crossers who committed crimes, and toppled Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy.

Biden’s day-one proclamations were just the beginning of what would become 296 executive actions on immigration and the southern security boundary in just his first year. Since then, the Democrat has continued to loosen border enforcement by demanding agents avoid making arrests, scaling back ICE deportation, and reinstating Obama-era catch-and-release.

Overall, nearly 1/3 of Biden’s border actions were reversals of his predecessor’s policies.

Biden’s pen doesn’t simply hold the power to undo our nation’s defenses. In October 2023, the Democrat waived 26 federal laws to resume construction of the border wall to comply with a 2019 appropriations bill.

Unlike Trump, who had to jump through judiciary hoops every time he tried to secure the Southern border, Biden could cut off the hundreds of thousands of people without a hitch thanks to the administrative state’s disinterest in opposing its preferred presidential pawn.

The only reason Biden has yet to use his power to secure the border (and satiate voters who say illegal immigration is their top concern heading into the 2024 election) is because he simply doesn’t want to.

With one stroke of a pen, our commander-in-chief could authorize the return of law and order to our border by shutting it down. With one press conference, he could threaten Mexico with steep tariffs for being an accomplice to the crisis as Trump did.

Instead, Biden is using more time and effort to pump up legislation that would codify the crisis and fight a state that wants to defend itself against the invasion.

Biden never had a change of heart about our national security crisis. He never wanted to secure the border. His decision to throw his weight behind controversial border legislation instead of exercising his executive authority simply means that the bill fits perfectly in his deliberate plan to run a borderless nation.

1 militarize the border, declare it a free fire zone, and put a well marked minefield along the border

2 make the hiring of an illegal punishable by a million dollar fine for each illegal and incarceration of a minimum of 10 years

3. Those claiming asylum must go to the closest safe country and remain there while the visa process works its way through the system.

“Only the Executive Branch has the power to enforce the border laws as has been argued time and again”

Thanks for the Info. Isn’t that sloppy lawmaking? Are there many laws that an executive can override?

It’s basically the way we’ve always done things. Congress writes the laws and the Executive Branch enforces them. The executive branch has a lot of agencies, and the agencies make a lot of regulations but at the end of the day they have the discretion what to enforce or not enforce, what to prioritize and what to de-emphasize. There is no other way. That is our system. Congress cannot force the executive to take any action though I do question how much leverage they could use they are not using. They have the power of the purse.

On the border, Trump didn’t need any act of Congress to enforce the border. He used the laws on the books. He did not allow catch and release with a notice to appear 3 years later (because the courts are clogged), he deported many of them right away. He went further too and used carrot and stick diplomacy. He told Mexico they had to control their border with Guatamala to stop people coming into Mexico, and to control their side of the US border. He threatened Mexico with trade sanctions and tariffs if they didn’t comply. He kept the asylum seekers in Mexico where they could apply for asylum at an embassy or consulate. Then they stayed in Mexico while their cases were adjudicated. Biden tossed all that aside. Biden lets them all in, doesn’t even take their picture or DNA in most cases. Just take their name and give them some paperwork and, often, a place to sleep and a bus or plane ride somewhere inside the country. It would be easy for people of similar age and height and weight to trade papers with someone else, and then tell everyone they are that other person.

Basically the system depends on having people of good faith in high office and high rank. If you put people with depraved ideas and vague motives in positions of power the system breaks and justice is impossible. There are many possible motives for why Biden and the Democrats are all in on open borders - in part its donors, in part it’s hope for future votes, in part it’s out census counting for congressional districts and allocations of federal funds to states and cities. Partisan politics is definitely part of this. Democrats think it gives them more power, so the laws and what is fair and right for the country and even the humanity of it are not really major considerations.
