Red China’s Hong Kong Crackdown Is About To Get Much Worse
The Federalist ^ | 01/31/2024 | Shawn Fleetwood

Hong Kong leaders backed by Red China’s communist party (CCP) are planning to accelerate their crackdown on basic freedoms throughout the city, government officials announced on Tuesday.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee revealed that the city would be expanding upon a national security law passed by Beijing in 2020 that effectively stripped Hong Kong of its status as a semi-autonomous region. The law criminalized many basic protest activities, such as classifying “groups speaking of potential independence” as guilty of “subversion.” Activities deemed to involve “secession,” “terrorism,” and “collusion with foreign forces” were also outlawed, all of which “carry a range of sentences up to life imprisonment.”

According to Kyodo News, Lee’s proposed legislation would build upon China’s overreaching edict by criminalizing so-called “treason and theft of state secrets.” It would also institute a prohibition on orchestrating so-called “political activities” and bar local groups from “establishing ties with them, a move designed to further crack down on dissent in Hong Kong.”

Public comment on the proposal is open until Feb. 28, when the city’s Legislative Council — which is filled with CCP loyalists — seeks to finalize it before the body’s session ends in July.

Tuesday’s announcement represents the latest attempt by Hong Kong officials to further suppress basic freedoms across the city. In 2019, the Beijing-backed government’s introduction of a controversial extradition law led to citywide protests and the CCP’s subsequent passage of the aforementioned national security law the following year. To further squash dissent, Hong Kong authorities employed the new dictate to arrest pro-democracy journalists and force several media outlets to cease operations, effectively destroying the city’s free press.

Government officials also overhauled the region’s election systems, wherein only “patriots” who have demonstrated their loyalty to the Chinese government are permitted to run for public office. Authorities also used the outbreak of Covid as an excuse to implement a CCP-style tracking system to further diminish what few freedoms residents possessed.

Quelle surprise. Communists lie about everything, and they’re killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
.
The Brits didn’t want to govern Hong Kong any longer, but they should have defied the CCP and extracted a new, much longer lease for Hong Kong, Kowloon, the New Territories, and environs. Mindless Marxists don’t know how to properly run a lemonade stand.

The British Conservative Party whose government is foaming at the mouth about war nowadays made the move to give Hong Kong to Communist China in 1997.

There was a report that the CIA either instituted or supported the Yellow Umbrella movement in Hong Kong.

If so, then I can see why the ChiComs are cracking down. I still disagree with the crackdown, but I can understand why they are doing what they are doing.

There are folks out there that think that toothy smile of
Jimmy Carter revealed the best post-president ever.

Trump was charged with never meeting a dictator he didn’t
love. Trump had to deal with them and get things done.
Carter met with them and truly respected them.

Carter envisioned himself a statesman, but he was a total
disaster with regard to foreign policy. He set up an Islam
Caliphate in Iran. He handed off the Panama Canal to China
in our hemisphere.

His poses with Castro, Chavez, Daniel Ortega, and North
Korea’s leadership, caused many of us to feel like puking.

We never would have allowed the USSR to control the
Panama Canal, but boy old toothy didn’t mind our next
adversary China having control of it.

China now has not only that, but relations with other
nations in South America. It can uses some of those
places for military bases, and I don’t doubt they will.

I say all this to remind folks what an ass Carter was,
and how we made bonehead moves similar to how Britain
did in Hong Kong.

No, there was only so much we could do as leases expired.
The problem is, we didn’t even try to keep the canal.

While the canal can’t handle the largest ships these
days, it still handles a lot of commerce, and would be
an important asset not to be able to use.

Can anyone imagine Carter being president during a time
when Israel has had to go after their terrorist
neighbors?

Thank God he isn’t, and I say that with no disrespect.

Britain should have given Hong Kong to Taiwan.

Hong Kong is already fully under China’s and the CCPs control. There is NOTHING the USA can directly do to change that

The USA needs to focus on its own freedom, living up to its Constitution and protecting the safety, welfare and jobs of its own citizens

We will only change the world by being a beacon of individual freedom (and not individual license) which above all means limited government

Hong Kong should be free. The British in their pathetic guilt gave everything away. British colonialism actually modernized the world and people. My point is not the dark side of colonialism but if one had to pick colonialism over communism,it is a easy choice. China is a parasite that does very little for the world. Taiwan will eventually be next.

***********************************************************

We need a law that the President, Representatives and Senators can be removed by a simple majority vote of the house of representatives for accepting anything of value (say over $10,000.00) from foreign countries.

If it is found to be over 1 million, 20 years in prison. If found to be over 5 million (like the Biden’s), life in prison without parole.

Lol. Britain with:

two aircraft carriers, six guided missile destroyers, eleven frigates and two amphibious transport docks) and ten are nuclear-powered submarines (four ballistic missile submarines and six fleet submarines). In addition the Navy possesses seven mine countermeasures vessels, twenty-six patrol vessels, two survey vessels, one icebreaker and one historic warship, Victory. The total displacement of the Royal Navy’s commissioned ships is approximately 421,200 tonnes.

Isn’t attacking anyone. One of the Carriers doesn’t have planes IIRC.

There was a report that the CIA either instituted or supported the Yellow Umbrella movement in Hong Kong.

100% of the Chinese-Americans I know believe that. They say the violence and vandalism of 2019 was so far outside the Chinese ethos that there was no way it was not planned and carried out by outsiders. I proposed to them at the time that Xi Jinping might have instigated it to create an excuse to crack down, but none of them thought that was likely. They were all certain it was a CIA attempt to stage a color revolution.

After comparing it to the very similar Summer 2020 BLM/Antifa tactics, they may have been right.

“ The USA needs to focus on its own freedom, living up to its Constitution and protecting the safety, welfare and jobs of its own citizens.”

True of course, but Non sequitur. That’s true whether Hong Kong is free or not or regardless of anything.

Weasley wording as well (“directly”)

Chicoms violted an international treaty so there is theoretically a lot that can be done.

But nothing will of any consequence.

Trump signed laws related to it. Those can help.

Chicons are on borrowed time.

True of course, but Non sequitur. That’s true whether Hong Kong is free or not or regardless of anything.

Constant propaganda and distraction, focusing on failings of other states in "freedom," while our own nation fails at it. the point was very clear and straightforward.

"Weasely words" - are you denying this obvious reality.
