Fla. Police: Son of Israeli Diplomat Intentionally Ran over Officer (Diplomatic immunity?)

The son of an Israeli diplomat was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly intentionally ran down a Florida police officer.

The incident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday when a Sunny Isles Beach police lieutenant had pulled over a vehicle, WPLG-TV reports. Avraham Gil was weaving in out of traffic on his motorcycle as he approached the officer.

The lieutenant motioned Gil, 19, to stop, but he continued traveling toward the officer. According to the arrest report, Gil "intentionally ran (the lieutenant) over."

Following the collision, the lieutenant was still able to bring Gil to the ground and apprehend him. Gil was arrested and charged with first-degree felony aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.

The lieutenant suffered an "incapacitating" leg injury in the incident. He's currently off work because of the injury.

Not sure immunity would apply to a 19 year old. Even if it did, a request could be made to Israel to waive immunity. Little doubt they would in this kind of situation. He might also be a permanent resident to which immunity would not apply in any case.

No. It does not. Diplomatic Immunity shkuld be limited to Diplomat, spouse and minor children, except in cases of murder.

From Yahoo News:

...Despite the allegation that Gil can’t be prosecuted, Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office said in a statement Wednesday the case remains open.

“Defense counsel’s representation was relied upon and the defendant was released on his own recognizance,” the state attorney’s office said. “After receiving confirmation from the State Department, Office of Foreign Missions, that neither the defendant nor his father have diplomatic immunity, we are proceeding as usual with our investigation.”...

Diplomatic immunity should only apply to matters of diplomacy. Drug smuggling, money laundering, attempted murder, rape, and traffic tickets etc should not apply.

True things can change but the children of diplomats have immunity and this is the only case of a son taking advantage of diplomatic immunity

Diplomatic immunity should not exist.

It only encourages lawlessness.

If it did, then it would be even worse. why isn’t that young man over in Israel engaging in the battle, but more importantly, why is he running over a policeman in this country? It’s the optics, but it’s also the actions.

the pictures of the injury show very little, if any, damage. i've had far worse from sparring sessions.

also, the bike looks to be a very small bike, maybe even smaller than 600cc. no mention of the bike's make or model in any story i could find.

Absolutely true!
Why should any foreigner be allowed to run rampant over our laws? DWI (very common), other thugery should be punished just as if it were you, or me.
Pretty sure other countries aren’t as lenient in these situations.

Yup. Wrong is wrong and justice should be done.

Even in the OT, God commanded foreigners who lived among the Israelites to be subject to the same laws as Israel.

My post on related thread,Crying Israeli diplomat’s son, 19, ‘intentionally’ ran over Florida cop with motorcycle, may avoid charges due to dad’s immunity: lawyer

They'll work it out, consular officials generally don't have immunity. What the kid said is irrelevant. He's being arraigned, so prosecution is proceeding, but could be stopped at some point on instructions from State. He would have begun his military service at 18 for 2 years, so he probably has an exemption. Aside from religious exemptions Israel has exemptions for physical and mental conditions. Service can also be deferred for various reasons, maybe his dad's position qualifies. Kind of stupid for the son of a political appointee not to report though. Can't help dad's career.
