Oregon Supreme Court stops 10 GOP lawmakers from running for re-election, siding with Democrat's ballot ban

Oregon high court decides 10 Republican state senators cannot seek re-election after record-long walkout

The Oregon Supreme Court decided on Thursday that 10 Republican state senators who participated in a record-long boycott last summer to block bills extending access to abortion for minors, transgender procedures and medical intervention, as well as another measure on ghost guns, cannot seek re-election this year.

The Oregon Senate Republican Caucus charged that the "Democrat-stacked supreme court sides with Democrats and union cronies on Measure 113 despite plain language of Constitution." The caucus stressed that the state high court's decision is "effectively ending the service of 10 Republican senators, who represent one-third of the Oregon Senate."

The ruling upholds Democratic Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade's announcement last August to disqualify the 10 lawmakers from the ballot under a measure aimed at stopping such boycotts. Measure 113, passed by voters in 2022, amended the state constitution to bar lawmakers from re-election if they have more than 10 unexcused absences.

Last year’s boycott lasted six weeks – the longest in state history – and stalled hundreds of bills. Five lawmakers sued over the secretary of state’s decision – Sens. Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum and Lynn Findley. They were among the 10 GOP senators who racked up more than 10 absences.

I left Portland for Montana in Spring of 2022 right after youngest graduated high school. My ex and kids’ mom is still there but I put in my time in that rapidly destructing Leftist sh*thole.

Imagine this law at the national level? Maybe even limit presidents, like Biden, for too many non-work days.

Judges get to decide who can be on a ballot. Which is to say, that Judges get to elect our officials.

When they want to get fancy, they have fraudulent elections that look almost like the real thing.
When they don’t want to fool around, they just kick the Republicans off the ballot.

Voters play no role, other than to pay taxes.

Don’t care. Invade Oregon and take over and change things, or let them suffer. Just.stop. Complaining. About. It.

Most Texas Democrats fled the state after the fall of Roe in a futile attempt to block passage of a pro-life Heartbeat bill.

The Texas Supreme court should follow Oregon's lead and forbid them from running for re-election.

Time to put Oregon in the Pro-Progressive column. In the meantime, the Eastern Counties need to keep trying to leave the State and be part of Idaho.

Progs have done that exact thing many times here in Texas, nobody on their side blinked an eye.

The Republicans that were trying to get them to come back to Texas to vote were called racists (?) bigots and the Republican legislators were “destroying democracy.”

Prog Av. is a one way street (according to those very same progs.)

See post 11. Ballot measure bans legislators with more than 10 excused absences. That’s the voters.

The Republicans need to find new candidates and drop the absence tactics.

I say they should go for it. It seems like the left is spoiling for another civil war.

So Democrats are Anti-Democracy. I mean, I knew Oregon was going more communist but they might as well reach out to Putin and join him. They espouse all of his policies. And to think the Antifa folks there call Republican Putin loves, the irony.
