Add Your Name: I Stand with Striking Journalists! {barf alert}
AFL-CIO press office ^ | 2024-02-06 | AFL-CIO press office

Strong journalism is a core part of a strong democracy.

When news outlets illegally fire their writers, it undermines our democracy and our free press. Misinformation can run rampant. Corruption and corporate greed can go unseen. Research shows that communities with less local news have lower civic engagement and voter turnout.

Publications have been going out of business for years as corporations buy them up for profit, consolidate them and then lay off workers. The trend continues for publications big and small.

If you stand with union journalists in the face of illegal firings, sign our open letter.

Illegal firing? It is of course illegal to fire people for union activity. You might think it shouldn't be, but it is.
But their own press release explains the real reason for all the firings (emphasis above added).

They claim union journalists stop misinformation.
They are also big on Democracy. They are making the world safe for it, see? { snicker }

Strong journalism is a core part of a strong democracy.

Weak journalism is a core part of a strong dictatorship.

And an aider and abettor of tyranny.

I can think of several I’d like to strike... (just enough to knock some sense into them!).

There are few, if any, actual journalists alive these days.

If nobody wants your product then you’ll go out of business. It doesn’t matter if you’re a union shop or not.

They can strike as long as they like for all I care. We get better, more legitimate, journalism from amateurs than from professionals these days.

Fired journalists or striking journalists?

I fully support both scenarios. Win-win!

Publications have been going out of business for years as corporations buy them up for profit, consolidate them and then lay off workers.

Profits have been hard to come by with news organizations which is why so many have been been able to be bought.

The first thing any company does after buying a failed business is try to make it profitable.

Rule of thumb in such situations is clear out the dead wood and eliminate unprofitable lines.

It is a well known practice. Demonizing such actions is common but there is nothing nefarious about it.

I 'stand' with striking journalists in order to snicker and snicker some more where and when they can hear the laughter.

I wonder how the AFL-CIO will attempt to unionize AI programs, as those 'journalists' are never to return?

I think it is high time that they teach us a lesson!

The overwhelming majority of journalists should band together, leave their jobs, and not come back!

Journalists that’s funny haven’t been one around for years.

More like a batch of Rona Barret’s gossip is the game.
