As a Platoon Leader in Germany, I saw careers ended over a confidential document called a CEOI that was lost during a field exercise. You tethered it to your person with a rope or chain so you don’t lose it. Funny things happen in the field, I constantly checked it for reassurance.
During alerts on Hahn AB, I was the Army Liasion Officer in the Wing CP. A NATO Top Secret clearance was required for entry. Lol, then there was the issue of an Army butterbar in the midst of dozens of AF Officers.
Dunno, maybe if these politicians had served in the military, they might have greater appreciation for handling classified information.
Trump has had his under lock and key.
Biden was the one that left them in a number of places that
were very suspect. One was reportedly a stockroom or some
such in a Chinatown. Let that sink in.
The entire classified document system is for the benefit of the President.
Further, some of Biden’s and a fair amount of Trump’s ‘Classified documents’ were personal notes.
While Biden’s possession of classified documents as Senator is analogous to what you describe, Trump’s case is quite different.
He isn’t required to show evidence!
Under his Presidential powers, just taking the papers home is enough to suggest declassification!
Why don’t people Read the laws anymore?

A President doesn’t have to do anything to “declassify” .
He’s allowed to possess classified documents which mostly include his papers.
