Pentagon and SpaceX Respond to Reports of Russia Using Starlink
Newsweek ^ | Feb. 9, 2024 | Yevgeny Kuklychev

"The military writes that the occupiers have Starlink with licensed accounts," Andriy Tsaplienko, a Ukrainian journalist, said on his Telegram channel ...

"They began to deliver Starlink en masse, via Dubai, accounts are activated, they work in the occupied territories" ...

"SpaceX does not do business of any kind with the Russian Government or its military," the statement said.

"Starlink is not active in Russia, meaning service will not work in that country. SpaceX has never sold or marketed Starlink in Russia, nor has it shipped equipment to locations in Russia. If Russian stores are claiming to sell Starlink for service in that country, they are scamming their customers.

"Starlink also does not operate in Dubai. Starlink cannot be purchased in Dubai nor does SpaceX ship there. Additionally, Starlink has not authorized any third-party intermediaries, resellers or distributors of any kind to sell Starlink in Dubai.

"If SpaceX obtains knowledge that a Starlink terminal is being used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party, we investigate the claim and take actions to deactivate the terminal if confirmed."

The statement did not explicitly address the question about the potential use of Starlink outside Russia, namely in occupied Ukraine, fueling further speculation. The map of the geographies covered by Starlink on its website appears to include at least some contested territories and those occupied by Russia.

The claim, disputed by SpaceX, sparked questions about the United Arab Emirates' alleged role....

Starlink was never intended for military use. It was always strictly a civilian communications system.

Russia began using an electronic warfare system near Avdiivka that intercepts Starlink signals, which it had previously tried several times in the Zaporozhye region. Access to Starlink was interrupted throughout Avdiivka.

If it’s flying over their air-space and they find a way to hack it, too bad for Elon.

Maybe...early in the Starlink rollout DOD did a test run using it. With that many satellites it’s impossible to completely knock it out...kind of a no brainer...full disclosure...I signed up the first week...took almost a year to get my service. I’m extremely happy at this point.

So if Russian soldiers are “occupiers,” then I guess we were also occupiers in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. The media never called us that, and our govt. told us we were trying to “liberate” the citizens of those countries and our intentions were pure. So apparently it’s okay when we invade and occupy a country but when Putin does the same in the Donbas, it’s bad. 🤣

Well, Musk did say that Starlink would be available in Ukraine...so as far as I’m concerned, he’s keeping his word.
