The Nazis recruited members of the Sturmabteilung (the SA) from Communists. Constantly in violent outbreaks coercing Commies to ... Socialism. Still redistributing money but ... not Communist (so much better they said, but of course it let to the destruction of the German Republic).

In 1933, after H. had come to power, whole bataillons of the Red Front Fighters changed their allegiance and switched wholesale to membership in the SA.
They were sometimes (but not to their faces, needless to say) mockingly referred to as the “Bulettenstürme”, i.e. “fried meatball bataillons” - brown on the outside, red on the inside :-)
