Former Dutch prime minister and wife die hand-in-hand in double euthanasia

A former Dutch prime minister and his wife have died hand in hand in a rare double euthanasia.

Dries van Agt and his wife, Eugenie, were both 93 and were buried together on Thursday.

“He died hand in hand with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg, the support and anchor with whom he was together for more than 70 years and whom he always continued to refer to as ‘my girl’,” The Rights Forum, a human rights charity he founded, said on Friday. The couple met as students at Nijmegen.

The Rights Forum described him as “idiosyncratic” and said that Van Agt and his wife were very ill, but “couldn’t live without each other”.

A Dutchman of Catholic stock, van Agt served as prime minister between 1977 and 1982. He was popular for his humour and for riding with Tour de France cyclists. He was branded a “Jesuit” and a “mystic” by political rivals.

The former Christian Democrat adopted increasingly Left-wing views later in life, opposing his party’s electoral agreement with Gert Wilders’ PVV in 2010.

Van Agt was especially vocal on the Israel-Palestine conflict, writing books on the topic and branding Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, “a war criminal” in 2016.

Euthanasia and assisted suicide have been legal in the Netherlands since 2002 under specific conditions.

Double euthanasia is rare but has been on the rise there with 26 in 2020 and 58 in 2022 out of a total of 9,000 euthanasia cases.

Their crime will not be prosecuted because the jury would find them endearing and befuddled. /sarc
(Yeah, I know it might not have been illegal. But they were out of ham sandwiches at the convening of the Grand Jury.)

Don’t knock it! Been married 67 years. He died of cancer in less than 6 mos.

67 years with one person is ‘forever’ love. Plus knowing each other since age 10.
Married at 15 & 16.
I always thought we would die together in our bed.
Now I’m lost and half of me is gone. It’s no life. It’s just existing. It’s hell.
I can see how these two would want to go together.

Only, I do want to go to heaven and I guess if you kill yourself you go to hell.
My friends say, “take care of yourself”. I don’t want to take care of myself, but self preservation kicks in and it’s also hell.
If I stop taking my medicines, is that the same as suicide? Most likely.

Nice how this dyed-in-the-wool leftist bastard was married for 67 years, yet conservative stalwarts like Trump and Reagan were divorced and unfaithful.

Leftists don’t have their private lives dug into by the press the same way they do to the anti-left; the vast majority of the time, the press covers for them, so skeletons in their closets get buried with them.

It wasn't just suicide, it was assisted suicide "euthanasia"-- where they didn't directly kill themselves, but had someone willingly, with forethought and not in self-defense, commit murder on them for pay. It's an entirely different thing.

They try to make it sound nice and even romantic, but whoever facilitated it was a murderer, no matter what their law says or how willing his victims were.

“Van Agt and his wife were very ill, but “couldn’t live without each other”.

Unless you are old and very ill, I think commenting on this is unreasonable. I went to a Memorial for a classmate of my husbands yesterday...he could no longer take the pain and made his choice.

My heart goes out to you. That would be the hardest kind of loneliness. Maybe reaching out to help others in similar circumstances, if you can, would bring some peace. Just a thought, God bless.

“A Dutchman of Catholic stock..”

Last I checked suicide was still “no bueno” in Catholic teaching.

Yes 67 years is a long time. We are going on 53 and I’d be lost without her. She was 19 and I was 21 when we got married, to this day I still call her my 19 year old.

I understand completely and feel the same way - we don’t have the history you and your beloved have and I cannot even begin to imagine your pain.

My heart goes out to you.

So touching, TribalPrincess2U. I understand what this Dutch couple did and it’s not up to me to say it was wrong.
