Trump will pull US out of NATO if he wins election, ex-adviser warns

As US allies reel from Donald Trump’s weekend comments encouraging Russia to attack European allies if they don’t meet NATO budget contribution goals, multiple former Trump advisers warn in my upcoming book that the former president will seek to formally withdraw the US from the NATO alliance if he wins a second term.

In “The Return of Great Powers”, which will be published March 12, a former senior US official, who served in both the Trump and Biden administrations at a high level, told me that if Trump defeats President Joe Biden in November “the US will be out of NATO.”

“NATO would be in real jeopardy,” John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, agreed. “I think he would try to get out.”

Trump’s disparagement of US security commitments extends to its mutual defense agreements with South Korea and Japan as well, retired General John Kelly, who served as White House chief of staff to Trump, told me.

“The point is, he saw absolutely no point in NATO,” Kelly said in the book. “He was just dead set against having troops in South Korea, again, a deterrent force, or having troops in Japan, a deterrent force.”

“He thought (Vladimir) Putin was an okay guy and Kim (Jong Un) was an okay guy that we had pushed North Korea into a corner,” Kelly recalled. “To him, it was like we were goading these guys. ‘If we didn’t have NATO, then Putin wouldn’t be doing these things.’”

Trump will be removed by hook or crook.

They fear him more than anything.

And here's why:

Jeffery Sachs: (Putin discusses) "a remarkable truth. The end of the Soviet Union did not at all end the US pressure and attacks on Russia.

"And, I think this is the real lesson of this -- it wasn't actually anti-communism, it was anti-Russia. And, it goes back two centuries, I would say, to British Russophobia..a century before communism.

"And the reason is Russia is big and powerful. And, in the British and US grand strategy, that, per se, is a threat, not the behavior, not communism or the post-communism. Simply the fact of a large, capable country is a threat.

"And, what we've seen after 1991, according to Putin's analysis, and I think it is absolutely correct...He says Russia said we just want normal relations. And, the answer was no from the United States. We want to surround you. We want to make sure you are weakened in every way. We will send the CIA to create unrest in the caucuses. We will send the CIA into your neighboring countries to overthrow governments."

Wrong...the agreement, however, is in whole and not in part. Everyone seems to be OK with ignoring thr whole 2.5% of GDP part od the agreement but get all bothered when another part of the agreement is ignored. All or nothing. The U.S will be able to defend herself if NATO disbands....Europe should think of that....and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you use leverage.

Its all hyperbole.
I think Trump is pushing to the nth degree in getting others to shoulder more of their burden as opposed to relying on the US for coverage.

What do we need NATO for anyway?

So, our elite and the defense industry can make $$$.

NATO is more of threat to national security than a benefit to it.

Bolton is a totally discredited idiot in my world.

This man should know what the Left wants to do to this
nation, and yet Trump is his pet peeve.

What a misguided fool...

NATO SMATO, Putin and the dip$hits who run NATO will make the question moot, possibly before Trump gets back to the White House.

True Fact. Biden and NATO pushed Russia into war with Ukraine.

Nonsense. Russia invaded Ukraine already in 2014. This invasion like the last was prompted by the same Obama weaklings being in power: NATO or no NATO, Putin would have never invaded Ukraine if Trump had remained in office. Trump greased 300+ Wagner mercs in Syria even though he wanted to withdraw. Trump would never tolerate any s--- from Putin.

But all this extreme idiocy in his name might cost him the presidency.

Nonsense. 95% of the nation couldn't give a hoot about NATO and anyone that does won't vote for him anyway.

Trump will gain more votes by openly saying we need to withdraw from NATO.

“I mean Trump literally said he will not honor US commitments to NATO.”

NATO hasn’t honored their commitments in decades. Why the hell should we keep paying for their end?

NATO was designed as protection against the ussr, which no longer exists. Now it’s just a cash cow for the defense industry.

The only reason Europe didn’t start up fighting again was we, the US, bound half of them in NATO and the USSR the other half in the Warsaw Pact.

That and the nuclear bomb.

It was a brief pause. With the break up of the Warsaw pact the Great Game began again. NATO breaks up and you will see a new war as a lot of old fights boil over.

Good, bad, or indifferent, NATO and the Warsaw Pact did keep a long stalemate by keeping everyone else locked down. That is over.

The hysteria in reporting Trump's comments is par for the course.

All Trump said was that, rhetorically, he would encourage Putin to attack the deadbeats like Germany and Belgium, almost all of whom are in Western Europe.

A real media would ask why the US with $34 trillion in debt is subsidizing the defense of NATO deadbeats. We should slap tariffs on imports from any NATO deadbeat to make up for it.

I don’t think he would pull us out of Nato but he might make NATO pay their fair share of the cost

Russia wants to be the Third Rome.

That will mean conquering a lot of people to bring that about. Putin’s interview spelled that out.

The Fins, Latvians, Estonians, and Poles are not really keen on being forced back into that. Now except for the Poles they may not be able to avoid being sucked into someone’s border, so it may be picking the least ugly girl at the bar for the Finns, and hoping the old boyfriend doesn’t rape them to bad for the Baltics.

NATO is where we have exercises watching British ships drive in circles on a single screw.

NATO countries in Europe are bravely defended by a unified Germany using leaking, non-functional GDR-era missiles that use Soviet batteries.

If the US gets into trouble with China, what do you think NATO members in Europe are going to do?

I didn’t even understand Putin’s answers to Carlson about wanting to join NATO or having a common missile defense. Against what, Martians?
