Trump will pull US out of NATO if he wins election, ex-adviser warns

As US allies reel from Donald Trump’s weekend comments encouraging Russia to attack European allies if they don’t meet NATO budget contribution goals, multiple former Trump advisers warn in my upcoming book that the former president will seek to formally withdraw the US from the NATO alliance if he wins a second term.

In “The Return of Great Powers”, which will be published March 12, a former senior US official, who served in both the Trump and Biden administrations at a high level, told me that if Trump defeats President Joe Biden in November “the US will be out of NATO.”

“NATO would be in real jeopardy,” John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, agreed. “I think he would try to get out.”

Trump’s disparagement of US security commitments extends to its mutual defense agreements with South Korea and Japan as well, retired General John Kelly, who served as White House chief of staff to Trump, told me.

“The point is, he saw absolutely no point in NATO,” Kelly said in the book. “He was just dead set against having troops in South Korea, again, a deterrent force, or having troops in Japan, a deterrent force.”

“He thought (Vladimir) Putin was an okay guy and Kim (Jong Un) was an okay guy that we had pushed North Korea into a corner,” Kelly recalled. “To him, it was like we were goading these guys. ‘If we didn’t have NATO, then Putin wouldn’t be doing these things.’”

He also added that he would encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they want to a nato member should Russia invade.

NATO members should be concerned.

This argument that once our military intervenes to defend a friendly country it must stay there forever is specious. It actually creates a self-fulfilling prophecy because countries that have perpetual U.S. protection will never develop adequate defenses of their own, thus creating the argument for U.S. troops remaining. We are beyond broke, so there is no time like the present for these countries to learn to stand on their own and defend themselves. What is especially galling is how the Eurotrash frequently take potshots at the U.S. for not having, in their opinion, as “glorious” a welfare state as Europe does, when the only reason they are able to maintain their welfare states (though they are still failing) is because WE subsidize their national defense.

I’m so sick of that unearned arrogance that I can’t wait to watch them freak out if and when Trump yanks the rug out from under them. It’s long past time.

Besides, why continue to defend a continent that is clearly hell-bent on destroying itself through mass Muslim immigration? If they don’t care about their culture and territory, then why should we?

Your post is interesting. I am convinced that it is the Atomic Bomb that has radically changed the behavior of the world’s Elites. They would have had the world engulfed in war by now, if not for the existence of The Bomb.

But, you postulate that it is the large organizations of NATO and the Warsaw Pact that have stayed the Elites. Certainly, attack against organization members would have involved the nuclear members. Without these organizations, perhaps we would see more aggression between non-nuclear countries - or a mad scramble for nuclear capability.

“I mean Trump literally said he will not honor US commitments to NATO. That’s his actual verbalized policy.“

Good.

That continent may wonder why we are destroying ourselves with mass Mexican and Central/South American immigration.

But over all - I’ll take the losers we are importing over the muzzies any day. But why have either?

NATO has never been for the benefit of the US. It has been for the benefit of Europe at our expense.

No. As a nation-state, Russia is and has always innately been an empire, with Ukraine its most essential conquest. A Russia without imperial ambitions and without Ukrainians as a subject people would have a different national mentality and would be more likely to become a modern democracy at peace with her neighbors.

Oh, John Bolton. Never mind. OTOH, maybe we should take a good hard look at leaving NATO. Let the Europeans deal with Putin.

And who in their right mind is paying John Bolton to write a book?! Maybe the same people paying Michael Isikoff.

The two most important steps to enhance and preserve US security into the future are a southern border wall/sealed border/deportations AND repudiation of the NATO treaty.

Nothing else comes close.

That’s not what he said, he said if the NATO members do not live up to their commitments (for a change) we won’t either. Trump is sick of the US being chumps paying the bill while the others don’t and so am l.

The Fins, Latvians, Estonians, and Poles are not really keen on being forced back into that.

Someone would have to be paranoid or crazy to believe that.

It's Russia that has been expanding since the end of the Cold War and it's not the Russians fomenting color revolutions in Europe. It's been NATO and the CIA doing that.

But, there is that fear, Europe can spend the money and build the army to fight Russia without our help.

NATO itself is a greater threat to the security of US citizens than Russia is.
