Idiots like Dan Partland and Rob Reiner notwithstanding, there was a definite strain of Christian mission among the patriots of the Revolution. When Ethan Allen took Ft Ticonderoga and surprised the camp commandant in his bed, he demanded his surrender “in the name of the great God Jehovah and the Continental Congress!” When the Continental Army was formed into an organized force, they took as their slogan, “No other king but Jesus.” To see this as a threat to democracy however, is pure antiAmerican hate.
