Hogan leads or ties major Democrats in Maryland Senate race: Poll
The Hill ^ | 02/15/24 9:30 AM ET | BY CAROLINE VAKIL

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is leading or tied with his top two potential Democratic challengers in the Maryland Senate race, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Emerson College Polling/The Hill/DC News Now survey found Hogan leading Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) in a hypothetical match-up at 44 percent to 37 percent among registered Maryland voters, with 19 percent undecided.

When Maryland voters are asked to pick between Hogan and Rep. David Trone (D-Md.), the poll shows a tighter race, with both men tied at 42 percent, and the remaining 16 percent undecided.

It’s a remarkable showing for a former GOP governor in a deep-blue state. Hogan only announced last week that he was running for outgoing Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D) seat. Meanwhile, polls show President Biden beating former President Trump in a hypothetical match-up there, 55 percent to 32 percent.

Hogan left office with a whopping 77 percent approval rating, according to a Gonzales poll last year. The Maryland Republican has also bucked his party at times as a vocal Trump critic, making him a formidable opponent in the blue state.

“In addition to the majority of Republican voters’ support in the general election, Hogan also holds broad appeal in a matchup against Trone among independents, at 48%, and also garners nearly a quarter of Democratic voters’ support,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a press release.

“In a matchup between Hogan and Alsobrooks, independents support Hogan 43% to 18%, and 31% of Democrats support Hogan.”

Like this matters. He'll be a reliable Democrat vote regardless.

Two Democrats running the one that puts an R next to his name leads wow.

Larry Hogan’s dad was in Congress a Republican on the House Watergate Committee in the 1970’s.

He voted to impeach Richard Nixon.

I can’t but help wonder how much money Dave Trone is gonna throw into this race?

He was a founder of Total Wine and has deep pockets and a willingness to spend it.

And in Maryland Hogan is about as conservative as you’re going to see.

Yes true if BOTH conditions are met.

Republicans should vote for the strongest Dem in any primary and then vote for that Dem in the general.

Hogan must be stopped. If he is elected, he then becomes the Sunday morning talk show designated Republican for interviews. He also will get himself plugged into the Senate Campaign Committee chairmanship and will defund MAGA candidates.

Do NOT get caught up in the whole majority/minority stuff. The GOP and Democrats are both fringe parties compared to Independents. And Independents are anti Swamp. Hogan is Swamp Creature In Waiting.

Right you are. Hogan would vote with the Republicans for Majority Leader and (probably) for things like the confirmation of federal judges. Everything else would be a dice roll.

But that’s still better than any Democrat these days. Sad, isn’t it?

Would be nice as far as giving the GOP a majority if he wins but he is as bad or worse than Romney if you need his vote it will not be there

I would vote for a tree stump before voting for Pudge Hogan.

A Mitt Romney from Maryland is not so bad. He might vote with us 60% of the time. Utah, however, can and will do far better than Mitt the $#*+.

Right. I don’t think he wants to win. I think he wants and is being used to keep someone from running that could win. RATS/RINOS have been doing that for years.

Yes, Larry is an anti-MAGA RINO. However, him winning an MD senate seat would be better than a democrat winning the seat. His win could determine who controls the Senate.
