BOSTON (AP) — With back-to-back Super Bowl victories for the hometown Chiefs, Kansas City football fans gathered for another championship parade and a second celebratory pep rally in a row.
Don’t expect there to be a third.
Not because the Chiefs, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes still just 28 years old, can’t win another NFL title. But even if they do, officials are unlikely to allow so many fans in one place to cheer them on, security experts said in the wake of Wednesday’s shooting just after the rally had ended.
“They have to think twice about having these parades,” said former Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans, who in 38 years with the department worked 12 championship parades and the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. “When you have that many people hanging around in one place, nothing good’s going to happen.”
As many as 1 million fans turned out to cheer on the Chiefs on Wednesday, three days after their 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58. The event included a parade down Grand Boulevard, followed by a rally in front of Union Station.
The celebratory music was still playing when gunfire broke out in the crowd. A mother of two was killed and 22 others were injured — half of them under the age of 16. Two teens were in custody, Police Chief Stacey Graves said.
The Kansas City violence is part of a troubling trend in which sports celebrations turn deadly, with alcohol often the fuel and guns the spark that ignite violence.
Just in the last year at least 10 people were wounded when gunfire broke out in downtown Denver amid fans celebrating the Nuggets’ NBA title...

Years ago when a coworker who was a mother heard me tell her of the news story ago that “the new bullet proof backpacks for school children are selling at a fast pace” she almost cried. “So little kids can’t even have a normal childhood any more.”

I was there. ;) Burning overturned Cop Cars, Chunks of Sod from Tiger Stadium ( Which I got some), The local branch of the Waffen SS cracking heads for Clydesdale's. I believe it also rained. Me and my girl at the time as I remember had a Great Time. Ahh. Detroit.
For many years sports playoff victories or defeats have had news stories of burning cars and people bleeding as they were carried away by EMT staff. Almost a guarantee in large cities. Not just for basketball or football rivalries.

You are right. I was going to Wayne State University for the 1968 Detroit Tigers victory and in another Michigan city for the 1984 one. All races celebrated and some of them did damage to clean up and caused injuries to treat.
The 1968 victory celebration was often said to have helped heal the wounds of the 1967 riots -—but obviously wasn’t enough back then. Population fell.

Sorry but I never noticed this kind of “celebration” or worse, “lamentation” when teams won or lost. And besides, those are spontaneous gathering, not organized events as this was.
I remember being disgusted in the ‘90s that this sort of behavior got more prevalent. I went to Maryland graduated ‘93, never recalled any riots over winning or losing. Then in a few years they start. I remember seeing film of bastard “collegiate” thugs stealing spbikes for the local bike shop. Even then was the first time I started saying “shoot these bastards” whether it was college or professional sports riots.
Ruined by leftists.
If these underhanded communist bleeding-heart bastards would do the moral thing and punish these common thugs, and rioters, this would never happen. It rarely happened in my youth if at all.
And in this case, this is an organized event. Not spontaneous celebration.
As usual, the limp- waisted lefties lock down everything, rather than hitting the thug bastards. Punish all good people because of some bad ones.
Charge admission and don’t allow people of color. Problem solved.

It's a guarantee because you have a lot of people drinking and they are losing their inhibitions.
I think people should be allowed to celebrate. But at the end, maybe host it at the football stadium. So they can use metal detectors. And the athletes can feel safe when they're accepting the trophy.
So apparently because of a few bad people we have to cancel parades? We cant demand good and decent behavior now?
I remember going to two organized Super Bowl parades in Denver after the Broncos won in 1998 and 1999. I certainly don't recall gunfire.
Funny, the article mentions 10 wounded in a shooting last year when the Denver Nuggets won. I don't even remember hearing about that. I'm sure it was memory-holed for the same reasons this Kansas City mass shooting will be.

The NFL has catered to the lowest common denominator of thug culture for the last several decades, but is just now dissatisfied with the results it produced. Shoooocking.
