Judge: Texas School Legally Punished Black Student for Hairstyle

A Black high school student’s monthslong punishment by his Texas school district for refusing to change his hairstyle does not violate a new state law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, a judge ruled Thursday.

Darryl George, 18, is a junior and has not been in his regular classes at his Houston-area high school since Aug. 31 because his school district, Barbers Hill, says he is violating its policy limiting the length of boys’ hair.

The district filed a lawsuit arguing George’s long hair, which he wears in tied and twisted locs on top of his head, violates its dress code policy because it would fall below his shirt collar, eyebrows or earlobes when let down. The district has said other students with locs comply with the length policy.

When let down. Sounds like a prohibition from letting it down.

Well he's already a year behind so it's not like he was an accomplished academic or anything

“monthslong punishment by his Texas school district for refusing to change his hairstyle”

Glad to see that the school district is focusing on important things like hairstyle rather than education.

A return to a dress code & proper behavior seems reasonable. If the kid doesn’t want to abide by school policy, his parents can home-school him or find a charter school with different rules.

Hell of a price to pay for being fashionable.
He doesn’t need an education anyway.

18? Looks like he is a year behind in school. I doubt a haircut will make him any smarter. But, what do I know. The state may think it’s worth a try.

If he puts his hair up who cares. If he is willing to attend school, who cares what he looks like? This school district is being ridiculous.

"Dozens of people turned out for the one-day trial in Anahuac, outside Houston, where George and his mother, Darresha George, had arrived expressing optimism."

No mention of Darryl's father. Why am I not surprised?

Sorry, went through the whole long hair b.s. in the late 60s. Long hair in high school was banned on boys because it was ‘distracting’. Bunch of bull then, bull now.

If this were some sort of honors academy where students had to apply to get in knowing about a dress code, that would be one thing.

But if it’s just a standard public school, the administrators are grossly overstepping their authority. Long hair is neither a health risk nor a safety risk. It does not violate standards of decency.

Seems to me that these administrators would have more important things to be concerned about.

He said his hair is “how I feel closer to my people. It’s how I feel closer to my ancestors. It’s just me. It’s how I am.”

excuse me................ choke, heave...... Gag. Baaaaaaaaaarf! wretch..... heave...... shutter..... Barrrrrrf... wash my hands and wipe my lips....Now I feel better...

some people just dont want to get along. Its a public school, not your house, not your Dojo.. comply or be home schooled.

Same here. I thought the unfairness of letting girls have long hair but not boys went out with Nehru jackets.
